FLUSHING, N.Y. – Trailing by as many as 25 points, the Queens College women's basketball team fought back to cut the deficit down to seven but fell short as they were defeated 83-74 by the visiting Saints of D'Youville University in East Coast Conference action Thursday evening.
How it Happened
The Knights came out sluggish as the Saints quickly built a double-digit lead and would take a 30-16 lead heading to the second quarter.
Trailing by 16 points, Queens went on a 9-2 run as they looked to find an offensive rhythm. But D'Youville continued to stay ahead and took a 50-33 lead into halftime.
The Saints took a 25 point lead, 64-39 at the 5:32 mark before the Knights started to make a dent into the large deficit. A quick 7-0 run led by
Jennah DeGout (Bronx, N.Y.) and sophomore
Aalia Carlson (Montclair, N.J.) brought Queens within 18, 64-46 with 4:24 left in the third quarter.
Queens ended the third quarter on a 9-4 run and would trail by 13, 71-58 heading into the last quarter of play.
After the Saints extended their advantage to 15, 73-58 at the 9:48 mark, the Knights went on a 12-4 run and cut the deficit down to seven, 77-70 with 2:51 to play.
But the Knights would run out of time as they fell 83-74 inside Fitzgerald Gymnasium.
By the Numbers
Five players scored in double figures as DeGout scored 14 points (4-of-6 FG, 6-of-6 FT) with six rebounds, while Carlson tallied 14 points (6-of-13 FG) off the bench.
Senior
Nora Gabel (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) notched 11 points (3-of-12 FG), freshman
Julia DeBeatham (Menands, N.Y.) scored 11 points (4-of-9 FG) with five rebounds and four assists off the bench.
While junior
Khadija Demry (Brooklyn, N.Y.) tallied 10 points (5-of-12 FG) with a team-high six assists.
Queens shot 38.4 percent (28-of-73) from the field and 32.0 percent (8-of-25) from beyond the arc. While D'Youville shot 50.0 percent (28-of-56) from the field and 50.0 percent (7-of-14) from three.
