Women’s Basketball Concludes Upstate Trip against Defending ECC Champions Daemen

AMHERST, N.Y. – Through three quarters of action, the Queens College women's basketball team hung around with the defending East Coast Conference champions Daemen University Wildcats inside Lumsden Gymnasium in conference play.

In a game that saw six ties and leads exchanges, the Knights were led by the trio of freshman Cecilia Lapertosa(Whitesboro, N.Y.), and juniors Khadija Demry (Brooklyn, N.Y.), Kendra McPeek (Binghamton, N.Y.) who combined for 26 points to lead the offense, but a sluggish fourth quarter would see the Knights drop their second ECC contest of the season Sunday afternoon.

Game Recap

Daemen opened the game on a 7-2 run before Demry notched five quick points to tie the game 7-7 before a McPeek jumper gave the Knights a 9-7 lead with 5:46 left in the first quarter.

After the Wildcats took a 10-9 lead, Demry and Lapertosa would put the Knights on a 4-0 run to take a 13-10 edge before the Wildcats went on a 5-0 run.

But graduate student Raven Pitt (Valley Stream, N.Y.) would end the final 30 seconds of the first quarter on a 4-0 run as the Valley Stream native gave the Knights a slim 17-15 lead heading into the second quarter.

The Wildcats started the second quarter on a 5-0 run to take a 20-17 lead before sophomore Tayanee Peay (Amityville, N.Y.) knocked down a shot from beyond the arc to tie the game 20-20 with 7:45 left until halftime.

Both teams would go into a shooting slump as they combined to go 2-6 from the field from the 7:23 mark to the 4:53 mark before the Wildcats closed the second quarter on a 7-1 run taking a six-point edge of 29-23 heading into halftime.

McPeek opened the third quarter with a layup to bring the Knights within four, 29-25 before Daemen went on a 12-2 run en route to taking a 41-27 lead forcing a Queens timeout with 6:47 left in the third quarter.

Queens would bring the deficit down to single digits as the visitors ended the third quarter on a 10-4 run as they trailed by eight, 45-37 heading into the final 10 minutes of play.

Looking to mount a comeback, a sluggish start would derail the Knights comeback attempt as the Wildcats went on a 9-0 run from the 8:20 mark to the 5:22 mark to seal the conference victory over the Knights to the final score of 61-43.
