Four Knights Register Double-Figures in Non-Conference Action Against Bridgeport

FLUSHING, N.Y. – Returning to non-conference play to close out their fall schedule, the Queens College men's basketball team welcomed former East Coast Conference opponent the University of Bridgeport Purple Knights to Fitzgerald Gymnasium Sunday afternoon.

Four separate Knights scored in double figures led by senior Tyler Carey's (Bay Shore, N.Y.) fourth double-double of the season with 15 points and 12 rebounds and sophomore Shamar Chester (Queens, N.Y.) recorded 15 points, while freshman Eric Tynes (Springfield, Mass) notched a career-high 13 points and sophomore Jayden Seraphin (Lakeview, N.Y.) tallied 11 points, but in a game of several runs by both teams, the Knights second-half comeback fell short as they dropped the non-conference affair to the final score of 76-69.

Game Recap

The Purple Knights opened the game on a 9-3 run before sophomore Tyron Wright (Camby, IN) opened an 11-2 run for the Knights to take a 14-11 lead with 14:07 left in the first half.

After the visitors tied the game 14-14, both sides would exchanges buckets before a three-pointer by Tynes put the Knights up by three, 21-18 just before the under-12 media timeout.

With the Knights leading 21-18, Bridgeport would go on a 13-0 run from the 12:03 mark to the 6:57 mark as Queen went 0-10 from the field before a made free throw by Seraphin stopped the scoring drought as they found themselves trailing by nine, 31-22.

Trailing by 13, 35-22, a layup by Seraphin would stop the field goal drought before the visitors extended their lead to 14, 38-24 with 3:16 left until halftime.

Queens would end the final 3:16 minutes of play on a 3-0 run as they held the visitors scoreless but the Knights would go into the locker room trailing by 11, 38-27.

In the first half, the Knights shot 28.1% from the field on a 9-32 FG shooting performance, while Purple Knights shot 40.6% with a 13-32 performance from the field.

Looking to overcome a first half deficit, the Knights continued their shooting woes as Bridgeport opened the second half on a 7-2 run from the 19:43 mark to the 18:47 mark to take a 16-point lead of 45-29 forcing Queens to take a timeout.

Facing a 19-point deficit, the Knights would slowly start to find their rhythm as they looked to cut their deficit down.

Trailing 58-44, the Knights would go on an 8-0 run led by Tynes four points before a jumper by Seraphin brought Queens within seven, 58-51 forcing a Bridgeport timeout with 9:21 in the game.

But the Purple Knights would tally another 8-2 run to bring their advantage back up to double digits for a 66-53 lead before Queens were forced to use a 30-second timeout with 5:31 left in the second half.

Chester would lead the Knights on an 11-2 from the 5:21 mark to the 2:42 mark with five points as Queens cut a 13-point deficit down to four, 68-64.

But it would be the closest Queens would get within a comeback before they dropped their second game in a row to fall 76-69 on the afternoon.
