FLUSHING, N.Y. – Opening a five-game homestand Friday evening, the Queens College men's basketball team welcomed the Redhawks of Roberts Wesleyan University to Fitzgerald Gymnasium in East Coast Conference action.
Sophomore
Jayden Seraphin (Lakeview, N.Y.) matched a career-high 21 points to lead all scorers, while the duo of sophomore
Tyron Wright (Camby, IN) and freshman
Eric Tynes (Springfield, Mass) combined for 23 points, but the Knights were unable to complete a second-half comeback rally as they dropped the ECC contest to the final score of 73-63.
Game Recap
It was a rematch of last season's ECC First Round playoff game, but both teams would open the game going scoreless for the first 1:21 second of play before Seraphin opened the scoring at the 18:39 mark.
Both sides would trade points for over the next several points before another scoreless drought entered the game.
After a three-pointer from Wright tied the game 9-9 at the 14:37 mark, the visitors would go an 8-0 run from the 14:06 mark to the 12:46 mark to take a 17-9 lead before Queens would respond with a run of their own.
A Tynes long-distance mark would start a 10-0 run as the Tynes and Seraphin combined for 10 points to give Queens a 19-17 lead with 11:14 left in the first half.
As both sides continued to buckets before a Seraphin dunk put the Knights up by three, 27-24, Roberts Wesleyan would go on a 7-0 run as they took a 31-27 lead at the 5:12 mark.
With Queens struggling to find their shot, free throws would keep the Knights within two, 31-29 before the Redhawks tallied an 11-2 to end the first half to take an 11-point lead of 42-31 heading to the locker rooms at halftime.
Queens would match the visitors shot for shot as they looked to cut their deficit down. Trailing by 10, 46-36, sophomore
Shamar Chester (Queens, N.Y.) would start a 7-0 run as the Knights cut their deficit down to three, 46-43 with 15:39 left in the game.
Both sides would continue to trade buckets once again but facing a seven-point deficit, 54-47, a three-pointer from Wright put the Knights on an 11-0 run from the 10:48 mark to the 8:29 mark as Queens reclaimed a slim 58-57 lead.
But the Redhawks would respond and reclaim a 60-58 just before the under-eight media timeout.
Both teams would go scoreless from the 8:01 mark to the 5:59 mark before senior
Tyler Carey (Bay Shore, N.Y.) tied the game back at 60-60.
In a game that featured 11 lead changes and nine ties, Queens would once again tie the game at 63-63 with 3:33 left in the game.
Having gone through 11 lead changes, the Redhawks would put the game away on a 4-0 run as the Queens went through a scoreless drought from the 2:49 mark to the 12-second mark as they went 0-5 from the field.
But the Knights will rue missed opportunity at the free throw line as they went 2-10 in the second half as they dropped their second ECC game of the season.
