Women’s Basketball Leads Wire-to-Wire in Non-Conference Victory over Bloomfield

BLOOMFIELD, N.J. – Powered by a career night by freshman Cecilia Lapertosa (Whitesboro, N.Y.) who recorded the first double-double of her career, and sophomore Aalia Carlson's (Montclair, N.J.) 14 points off the bench, the Queens College women's basketball team defeated the Bears of Bloomfield College 74-60 Tuesday evening at Bloomfield College Gym. 
 
Game Recap
 
The Knights tallied the first bucket of the game on a layup from junior Khadija Demry (Brooklyn, N.Y.) at the 9:24 mark and would never trail. After the Bears tied the game on their next possession, a layup by freshman Gianna Henriques (Bronx, N.Y.) would start a 16-3 run for the Knights from the 8:45 mark to the 3:21 mark as they held an 18-5 advantage. 
 
Queens would hold the Bears scoreless until the 2:39 mark before the home side tallied eight quick points to cut into the Knights' lead before a layup by Henriques extended Queens' advantage to nine, 22-13 at the end of the first quarter. The Knights shot a searing 71.43% from the field going 10-14 from the field. 
 
After the Bears opened the second quarter on a 5-2 run to bring the score down to 24-18, a 7-0 run would allow the Knights to extend their lead back to double-digits 31-18 with 4:53 left until halftime. 
 
Demry and Carlson jumpers would ensure the Knights went into halftime leading by 11, 35-24 with Demry and Henriques combining for 16 points. 
 
After the Bears opened the third quarter with two straight buckets, a Carlson's jumper from long distance would extend the Knights' lead back to 10, 38-28 with 9:08 left in the third quarter. 
 
The third quarter would quickly turn into the Carlson and Lapertosa show as the duo combined for 20 points. 
 
After a period of play where both teams combined for just one field goal, but with Queens leading 40-29, Carlson tallied nine points to put the Knights back up by 14 points, 51-37 with 3:19 left in the quarter. 
 
After the Bears tallied four points, sophomore Chelsea Reeves (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and Lapertosa went on a 6-0 run as the Knights took a 16 points edge of 57-41 with 53 seconds left until the fourth quarter.
 
The Bears would close the quarter on a 4-0 run but the Knights would hold the advantage with a 57-45 lead heading into the final 10 minutes of play. 
 
Queens would open the fourth quarter on a 6-0 run from the 9:15 mark to 7:50 as the Knights took a lead of 18 points (their largest lead of the game) of 63-45, a lead they would never relinquish to earn their first victory of the season. 
 
Game Highlights
  • It was a career night for the rookie Lapertosa who led the game with her first double-double of the season with 18 points (8-12 FG), 11 rebounds to go with four assists, and two steals. 
  • Carlson tallied 14 points (6-17 FG) off the bench, while Demry notched 12 points (6-11 FG) with a season-high five assists. 
  • While Henriques notched a career-high eight points (4-6 FG) to go with five rebounds. 
  • Queens won the rebounds battle holding a 39-34 edge. 
  • The Knights shot a season-best 50.0% from the field with a 33-66 shooting performance including a two 22-point performance in the first and third quarters.
