FLUSHING, N.Y. – As East Coast Conference play continued Saturday evening, the Queens College women's tennis team welcomed the Spartans of St. Thomas Aquinas College to Flushing at the QC Tennis Bubble.
In a back-and-forth match that came down to a doubles tiebreaker for the doubles points and two singles in a three-set match set, the Knights would suffer a setback in ECC play as they fell 5-2 to the Spartans for their first loss of the season.
With the loss, the Knights moved to 3-1 overall, and 3-1 in ECC play.
Doubles Play
The Spartans took a 1-0 lead as the #2 doubles pair of junior
Ana Tarbujaru (Valcea, Romania) / junior
Caroline Hany-Fawzy (Alexandria, Egypt) fell 6-3 to the pair of Jemima Parkinson/Elita Silins.
Staring at going down 1-0 in the match, the Knights #1 senior doubles pair of
Maja Makal (Bialystok, Poland) / Gabriela Sciarrotta (Woodmere, N.Y.) battled back from a 5-3 deficit against Ebba Rosberg/Samanta Robles. The Queens duo would rally back with four straight points to win 7-5 and tie the doubles competition at 1-1.
At #3 doubles, it was a back-and-forth affair as senior
Chloe Certain (Obernai, France) / sophomore
Rea Hagishima (Tokyo, Japan) went toe-to-toe with Paula Palero/Eliza Mulder. But it would be the Spartans who take a 1-0 match lead heading into singles as the visitors won the #3 doubles in the tiebreaker to the score of 7-6
(7-2).
Singles Play
Fawzy ran her undefeated streak to 2-0 on the season at #2 singles as the Egyptian native defeated Pavlovets in straight sets to the score of 6-1, 6-4 to tie the match 1-1.
The Spartans would retake a 2-1 lead as Tarbujaru fell at #3 singles to the score of 6-2, 6-4.
Sciarrotta would tie the match following her two-set victory over Robles at #4 singles to the score of 6-4, 6-3.
But it was the Spartans who would regain the lead following Certain defeat at #6 singles to Silins to the score of 6-4, 6-3.
With the Spartans leading 3-2, It was still anybody's match to emerge victorious. At #1 singles, Makal would force a third set tiebreaker as she fell 6-3 to the #1 singles player in the East Region Rosberg. But the Senior would clinch the second set with a 6-4 victory forcing a third set.
While at #5 singles junior
Mariana Ling (Orlando, Florida) took the first set to the score of 6-3 over ITA East Regional Singles runner-up Amaia Brau. But Brau would force a third set as she defeated Ling in the second tie in a tiebreaker battle to the score of 7-6
(8-6).
But the Spartans would emerge victorious over the Knights 5-2 Saturday evening as Makal fell 6-3 in the set before Ling was defeated to the score 6-2.
