FLUSHING, N.Y. – The East Coast Conference Women's Tennis Championship gets underway Friday (Oct. 28) morning as 44th year head coach
Alan Nagel and the Knights look to capture their third crown in four years.
The Knights are in search of their 10
th conference title and third in four years. Nagel has led the women's program to a conference record nine titles since 2003. Since 2001, Queens has advanced to the championship match 19 times
(conference record).
Regular Season Recap
Nagel and his Knights finished the regular season with a 4-2 overall record and 3-2 in conference play.
Queens has earned the #3 seed and will open the tournament against 2021 champions and #2 seed The University of the District of Colombia Firebirds Friday morning who dethroned the Knights to the final score of 4-2 in the championship match last season.
The Knights fell 4-3 this past Saturday in a closely contested match in the nation's capital to the Firebirds. Queens took a 1-0 lead following the conclusion of doubles play as the #3 pair of sophomore
Rea Hagishima (Tokyo, Japan) / senior
Chloe Certain (Obernai, France) and #1 senior pair of
Maja Makal (Bialystok, Poland) / Gabriela Sciarrotta (Woodmere, N.Y.) earned the victories.
In singles play, freshman
Apolline Lamy (Toulouse, France) earned a two-set victory which saw both sets go down to the fire. While Certain earned a comeback three-set victory at #6 singles.
Queens is led by Poland native Makal who has compiled a record of 3-2 at #1 singles and an overall record of 6-3. While junior
Caroline Hany-Fawzy (Alexandria, Egypt) missed the Firebirds match due to illness and finished the year undefeated in conference play at #2 singles with a 2-0 record and holds a 7-1 overall record in singles play.
Fawzy has been stellar in singles play as the Egyptian native advanced to the semi-final match of the ITA East Regional Tournament back in late September before falling to the eventual winner in Sanne Selmer Gilje of Adelphi University.
While Lamy finished the regular season with a 5-1 overall record and undefeated in conference play with a 4-0 record with wins coming at #2 and #4 singles.
Sciarrotta finished the fall with a 5-2 overall record as the Woodmere native went 4-1 in dual matches including a 3-1 record in ECC play.
While junior
Mariana Ling (Orlando, Florida) went 4-2 in dual matches and finished undefeated at #4 singles with a record of 2-0. The French native Certain finished the regular season with a 2-1 conference record at #6 singles.
In Doubles play, the duo of Makal/Sciarrotta went 7-1 overall and 4-0 record in conference play at #1. While the pair of Hagishima/Certain went 4-2 overall which included a run to the Quarterfinals round of the ITA Doubles East Regional Tournament.
With a win on Friday, the Knights will advance to the finals for the 20th time and will face the winner of the other match between the #1 seed and regular season champions St. Thomas Aquinas College Spartans and #4 seed Daemen University Wildcats.
Queens swept Daemen 7-0 to open their conference schedule. While the Spartans defeated the Knights 5-2 earlier this season but it was a match for anyone for the taking. The doubles action went to a tiebreaker while two singles matches went to the third set to decide the final points of the evening.
