FLUSHING, N.Y. – Looking to rebound off a tough loss Saturday afternoon, the Queens College volleyball team bounced back with a convincing straight-set sweep over D'Youville University Saints Sunday afternoon in East Coast Conference play.
Freshman
Lindsay Osterhoudt (Orlando, FL) led the way with a career-high 11 kills hitting a scorching .647 on the afternoon with two blocks, while sophomore
Christina Franco (Lynbrook, N.Y.) tallied eight kills with 22 digs and rookie
Kendall Conrad (Carrolltown, PA) notched eight kills hitting .333 to help the Knights complete the 3-0 sweep
(Set Scores: 25-12, 25-21, 25-16) over the Saints.
With the win, Queens improved to 10-11 overall, and 4-3 in ECC play. The 10 wins are the most in a single season since the 2015 season when the Knights finished 11-15 overall. The four conference wins are the most since the 2017 season as the Knights look to lock up a postseason spot for the first time since 2008.
Head coach
Stefan Leger and his Knights earned their first sweep over a conference opponent since the 2017 season when the Knights swept Roberts Wesleyan. It is the second series sweep of the season with the Knights defeating Le Moyne back on September 10 and October 7 in non-conference play.
Recap (Final Score 3-0 25-12, 25-21, 25-16)
The Knights came out strong as Conrad tallied three quick kills to give the Knights a 6-1 lead. D'Youville would trim the lead down to 7-3 before Osterhoudt started another 6-0 run as the Knights took a 13-3 advantage.
Queens stayed out front and never looked back as they took the first set with a convincing 25-12 victory for a 1-0 lead.
With the second set tied 2-2, sophomore
Alicia Cervera Sospedra (Valencia, Spain) notched a service ace before Conrad and Osterhoudt combined for three kills giving the Knights a 6-2 lead.
The Knights continued to stay ahead as they led 11-5 before the Saints rallied back with a 9-1 run taking a 14-12 advantage.
Franco would stop the run with a kill before a service ace by the Lynbrook native tied the set 14-14.
Both sides would trade points before Franco notched multiple kills giving Queens a three-point edge for a 21-18 lead.
With the Saints refusing to go away, junior
Anjeline Arnakis (Bayside, N.Y.) and senior
Alexis Deodat (Tampa Bay, FL) took control towards the latter stage of the second set.
A kill by Arnakis and a solo block from Deodoat put the Knights one point from taking a 2-0 match lead before a kill by Arnakis earned the Knights a 25-21 second set victory and one set away from sweeping the Saints.
The third set saw the visitors start the set with a 7-5 lead before Arnakis and senior
Leila Hadjeb (Queens, N.Y.) tied the set at 7-7.
But each side would trade errors before the Knights took control of the third set with a 9-1 run taking a 17-10 lead, a lead they would never relinquish as they completed the series sweep over D'Youville with a 25-16 third set victory.
