Women’s Basketball Battles Mercy in Dobbs Ferry

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. – On Wednesday evening, the Queens College women's basketball team concluded a season-high three-game road trip at Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. as they clashed with the Mavericks of Mercy College at Victory Gymnasium.

Hurt by early turnovers and undermanned, the Knights young squad was unable to battle back as they fell for the second straight game to the final score of 99-60 to the Mavericks in East Coast Conference action.

How it Happened

Queens went toe-to-toe in the early going as they stayed pace with Mercy. Trailing by two, 10-8, the Knights would commit four turnovers and miss their next four shots as the home side closed the first quarter on a 17-0 run to take a 27-8 lead.

The Knights would break the scoring drought on a made three-pointer from sophomore Aalia Carlson (Montclair, N.J.) but the Mavericks would continue to build on their lead. Despite Queens shooting 66.7 percent (8-of-12 FG) in the second quarter, the deficit would prove to be much for the shorthanded Knights squad to overcome.

By the Numbers

Four players scored in double figures led by Carlson who led the Knights with a team-high 14 points (5-of-13 FG, 2-of-3 3PT) for the second consecutive game to go with four rebounds. Senior Nora Gabel (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) tallied 12 points (4-of-6 3PT) with a team-high four made three-pointers. While junior Khadija Demry (Brooklyn, N.Y.) tallied 11 points (5-of-12 FG), her seventh double-digit performance of the season to go with four assists.

Freshman Jennah DeGout (Bronx, N.Y.) tallied 11 points (5-of-11 FG) with five rebounds. While classmate Chelsea Reeves (Brooklyn, N.Y.) brought down a career-high 13 rebounds and six assists.

Queens was held to 38.3 percent (23-of-60) from the field and 60.0 percent (6-of-10) from beyond the arc. While Mercy shot 51.4 percent (38-of-74) from the field and 40.9 percent (9-of-22) from three.

The Knights outrebounded the Mavericks by a 40-38 margin.

UP NEXT: Queens return home on Friday (Jan. 21) on ECC Officials Appreciation day as they welcome defending ECC champions Roberts Wesleyan College Redhawks. Tip-off set for 5:30 p.m.
