Gabel’s 21 Points Not Enough as WBB Knights Fall to Redhawks

FLUSHING, N.Y. – On Friday evening senior Nora Gabel (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) notched a season-high 21 points but the Queens College women's basketball team was unable to rally back as they fell 78-62 to the visiting Roberts Wesleyan College Redhawks in East Coast Conference action.

How it Happened

Queens started the game missing their first four shots as Roberts Wesleyan jumped out to a 4-0 lead before freshman Jennah DeGout (Bronx, N.Y.) completed a three-point play to put the Knights on the board. But the Redhawks would build an 11-7 lead with 4:03 left in the first quarter.

Queens would go on an 8-2 run to take a 15-13 lead as freshman Chelsea Reeves (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and Gabel combined for six points. But both teams would go into the second quarter tied 18-18 with the Knights shooting 66.7 percent (2-of-3 3PT) from beyond the arc.

The Redhawks opened the second quarter on a 5-0 run to take a 23-18 before the Knights battled back to get within three, 25-22. But with 7:55 left in the second quarter, Reeves would pick up her third foul of the game forcing the rookie out of the game. With their conference-leading scorer on the bench, Queens were thrown out of their groove as Roberts Wesleyan closed the quarter on an 18-8 run taking a 43-28 lead into halftime.

Despite matching the Redhawks in the second half with 37.9 percent shooting, the undermanned Knights squad was unable to rally back from the 15 point halftime deficit to fall 78-62 on the evening.

By the Numbers

The Knights were led by Gabel's 21 points (7-of-17 FG) who made a season-high five three-pointers to go with five rebounds. Reeves tallied her third double-double of the season with 11 points (2-of-9 FG, 6-of-8 FT) and team-high 12 rebounds.

Junior Khadija Demry (Brooklyn, N.Y.) tallied 9 points (3-of-10 FG) and a career-high seven assists on the night.

Notable: Without Reeves on the court, the Knights were -12 in points difference as she was forced to sit out the final 7:55 of the second quarter.

Queens was held to 35.0 percent (21-of-60) from the field and 43.8 percent (7-of-16) from beyond the arc. While Roberts Wesleyan shot 45.9 percent (28-of-61) from the field and was held to 29.4 percent (5-of-17) from three. The seven made three pointers are the most made three pointers by the Knights since the 2019-20 season opener against Jefferson on November 9, 2019.

UP NEXT: Queens hits the road on Sunday (Jan. 23) as they travel to Bridgeport, CT with a matchup against the University of Bridgeport Purple Knights in ECC play. Tip-off set for 1:00 p.m.
