FLUSHING, N.Y. – Led by season-high 15 kills from junior
Dee-Ana Mitchell (Middle Island, N.Y.) and a double-double by freshman
Christina Franco's (Lynbrook, N.Y.) with 10 kills and 17 digs, the Queens College volleyball team defeated the visiting D'Youville College Saints 3-1 in East Coast Conference action Sunday afternoon.
With the win, the Knights snapped a seven-game losing streak to pick up their second win of the season to improve to 2-9 overall, 1-1 in ECC play, while the Saints moved to 1-9 overall, 0-2 in the conference.
Sunday's win over D'Youville was the Knights' first conference win since November 12, 2018, snapping a 25-game losing streak in conference play.
How it Happened
- The Knights jumped out to a quick 8-2 lead as Mitchell tallied three quick kills.
- Leading 17-11, Queens used a 6-0 run to push their advantage to 23-11 before closing the set with a 25-13 win to lead 1-0.
- The Saints would jump out to a 4-0 lead before the Knights rallied back to get within one (5-4).
- Tied 9-9, the Saints jumped ahead 15-9 as attacking errors hurt the Knights.
- Trailing 18-10, Queens rallied back to take a 19-18 lead with a 9-0 run.
- Both sides would trade points before the Saints tied the match 1-1 taking the second set 26-24.
- The third set would see both teams going back and forth on points before Queens jumped out to a 14-13 advantage.
- After D'Youville would get within one (16-15), a quick kill by freshman Despina Boudouris (Merrick, N.Y.) would start a 6-0 run to push their advantage to 22-15.
- After a kill by Franco pushed the Knights one point away from taking the third set, sophomore Alexis Deodat (Riverview, Florida) would seal the third set with one of her season-high nine kills as Queens went up 2-1 with a 25-20 third set win.
- Led by sophomore Leila Hadjeb (Queens, N.Y.) two service aces, Queens went ahead 3-1 in the fourth set.
- After the Saints came back to tie the fourth set 9-9, Queens went on a 6-0 run taking advantage of Saints' errors to lead 15-9.
- Leading 20-16, Franco would deliver with two service aces before Mitchell's kill would give the Knights a 25-16 fourth victory and their first conference win of the season.
By the Numbers
- Mitchell led the offense with a season-high 15 kills while serving up four service aces.
- Franco found her early form as she notched her third double-double of the season with 10 kills, 17 digs, and two service aces.
- It was a career-high day for Hadjeb as she tallied 22 digs and four service aces.
- Boudouris was brilliant as the Knights setter with a career-high 37 assists, 10 digs, and career-high five kills.

UP NEXT: The Knights hit the road as conference play continues with a matchup against the University of Bridgeport Purple Knights. First serve is slated for 7:00 p.m. Wednesday evening.
