Volleyball Battles Adelphi in Flushing

FLUSHING, N.Y. – After two Tri-matches on the road, the Queens College volleyball team returned to Flushing to open a three-game homestand starting with non-conference action against the Panthers of Adelphi University Tuesday evening.

The Knights competed hard in the first two sets giving the Panthers all they could handle but would eventually fall in three sets to drop their sixth match in a row. The set scores were 18-25, 20-25, 12-25.

With the loss, the Knights moved to 1-8, while the Panthers improved to 10-2 on the season.

How it Happened
  • Queens opened the first set on a 4-0 run before the Panthers rallied back to tie the set 7-7.
  • After a kill by junior Dee-Ana Mitchell (Middle Island, N.Y.) put the Knights up 11-10, the Panthers went a 3-0 run to take a 13-11 lead.
  • Still within striking distance after a Panthers service error brought the Knights within two (20-18), the visitors would end the first set on a 5-0 run to take a 1-0 set lead.
  • In the second set, the Panther jumped out to a 6-2 lead before the Knights battled back to tie the second set 7-7.
  • Freshman Christina Franco's (Lynbrook, N.Y.) kill would bring the Knights within two (17-15) before another 5-0 run gave the visitors a commanding 22-15 lead.
  • Despite a late 3-0 run to get within four (23-19), the Knights would drop the second set 25-20 to trail 2-0.
  • Trailing 2-0, led by Franco the Knights opened the third set on a 4-0 run, but the Panthers continued to match each Knights run with runs of their own.
  • But errors would hurt the home side as the Panthers went on a 7-0 run to take a commanding 11-6 advantage.
  • With the damage already done, the Knights would be unable to get within the match and drop the third set 25-12, and fall to their first sweep at home.
By the Numbers
  • Franco would fall short of another double-double as she tallied nine kills and digs to lead the Knights.
  • Mitchell notched seven kills and six digs on the night.
  • Freshman Despina Boudouris (Merrick, N.Y.) tallied 15 assists and nine digs to fall short of her second double-double of the season.
UP NEXT: East Coast Conference play returns to Flushing as the homestand continues on Saturday (Sept. 25). The Knights welcome the Wildcats of Daemen College to Flushing for a noon start time.
