Box Score FLUSHING, N.Y.- The Queens College men's tennis returned to action for the first time since the 2021 NCAA Men's Tennis East Region Tournament as they competed in the ITA East Regional Tournament.
The Knights saw #8 junior
Kareem Rashad (Alexandria, Egypt) advance to the semi-final of the Singles championship draw, while the junior duo of
Lucas Demuth (Buenos Aires, Argentina) and
Moritz Borges (Hunxe, Germany) advanced to the semi-final of the double's championship draw.
Singles Championship
In search of an ITA East Regional Championship, the Knights started with nine players in the round of 64. Seeded #5 sophomore
Tim Ostheimer (Frankfurt, Germany) would get knocked out in the first round with a 2-6, 6-3, 1-0 (7-4) loss to Post University Ivan Kolchanov. Seeded #7 junior
Mariano Bibiloni (La Plata, Argentina ) would suffer a straight-set 6-1, 6-1 loss to Eduard Simo of St. Thomas Aquinas College. While senior
Hugo Evangelista de Andrade (Goiania, Brazil) would fall 6-4, 6-4 to Jack Kosiorowski of UScience in the round of 64.
Six Knights would advance to the Round of 32 as Demuth defeated Stonehill College Christian Duffy to the score of 7-5, 6-2 before falling 2-6, 6-3 1-0 (7-3) to Thomas Guy of SNHU. Sophomore
Francisco Gonzalez (La Plata, Argentina )would defeat Samuel Greco to the score of 6-1, 6-0 before being defeated by Tom Jarry of Le Moyne 6-2, 6-1 to end his run. Freshman
Philipp Uhde (Heidelberg, Germany) made his Knights debut by winning his opening match over St. Thomas Aquinas Valentin Barani with a 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) victory. But he would fall to Daemen College Luis Devust to the score of 7-5, 6-1.
On a busy weekend, Borges would advance to the Round of 16. Borges picked up victories over Dominican College Marcos Lee 6-4, 2-6, 1-0 (12-10), Jared Howard of Le Moyne 7-5, 3-6, 1-0 (11-9) but would fall to #13 Adelphi University Marko Jovanovic to the score of 6-2, 6-1.
Two Knights advanced to the quarterfinals and matched up with each other as Rashad met fellow teammate sophomore #
15 Omar El Shehawey (Cairo, Egypt). Shehaway runs to the quarters included victories over Usciences Heimraj Resaul (6-3, 6-2), SNHU Boris Stastny (6-2, 6-3), and Slobodan Cejovic of STAC ( 1-6, 7-6 (7-4), 1-0 (7-5). Rashad would end Shehawey's quest for a single championship with a 6-1, 6-1 victory to advance to Sunday's semi-final.
Rashad ranked #8 was the lone Knights remaining in the final over as he picked up victories over Tanaka Chabata of Dominican College (6-1, 6-1), Post University Jose Nunez (6-0, 6-1), SNHU Fernando Torres (6-2, 6-2) and teammate Shehawey. Facing eventual winner Tom Jarry of Le Moyne, Rashad lost in one of the closely contested matches of the tournament. Jarry picked up the first set victory of 7-6 before Rashad battled back to win the second set to the score of 7-5. In a thrilling match that would bound to leave one of the players devasted, Jarry would pick up an 11-9 tiebreaker victory to knock out Rashad.
Doubles Championship
In the doubles competition, the Knights pair of Bibiloni/Rashad were seeded #1, while the duo of Borges/Demuth were seeded #5.
Bibiloni/Rashad's quest for a title would end in the Round of 32 as they fell 9-8 (7-5) in a heartbreaking loss to USciences Serra/Kosiorowski.
Shehawey/Uhde would fall in the first round as they were defeated by Le Moyne pair of Howard/Howard to the score of 8-4. The pair of Evangelista/Gonzalez would fall 9-8 (7-5) to the pair of Sousa/Kvint of Chestnut Hill College.
While Ostheimer/ sophomore
Julius Schulte (Dusseldorf, Germany) advanced to the Round of 16 with an 8-4 victory over Post University Anderson/Smith. Their tournament would end in the next round as they fell to eventual winners in the pair of Torres/Berling of SNHU in an 8-1 loss.
Lucas Demuth (Buenos Aires, Argentina) and Moritz Borges (Hunxe, Germany)
The Knights pair of Borges/Demuth's quest for a doubles title would end in the semi-final as they were defeated by Le Moyne pair of Jarry/Miller to the score of 8-5. The duo would pick up victories over Dominican College pair of Ross/Lodhan (8-2), USciences Ramons/Gan-Dy (8-4), and Adelphi pair of Horsley/Negrao (8-5.
