FLUSHING, N.Y.- As the weekend weather forecasted switched the three-game East Coast Conference series to a Friday's doubleheader and Saturday single against the visiting D'Youville College Saints. The Queens College Knights tallied 25 tallied for 18 runs as they won game one 10-1, before completing the sweep in the nightcap for a 6-2 victory.
With the sweep, the Knights improved to 5-5 overall, 4-4 in ECC play, while the Saints moved to 2-11 overall, 0-7 in ECC action.
Game One: Queens 10, D'Youville 1
The offense came alive in game one as the Knights posted 10 runs on 17 hits for the first time this season with each batter recording a hit while six batters recorded two hits or more from the starting lineup. The 17 hits are the most since the Knights tallied 20 against Stonehill College on March 6, 2019, in the 11-10 thriller in Lake Worth, Fla. While it is the highest hits total posted at Hennekens Stadium since the Knights tallied the Southern Connecticut State University defense for 16 hits in the 13-4 win back on March 7, 2020.
After three scoreless innings play as game one starter sophomore lefty
Dean Fazah (Queens, N.Y.) (1-1, 5 IP, H, BB 4K) kept D'Youville offense hitless, Queens went to work in the home half of the fourth inning. With one out, freshman
Reed Hoskins (Freeport, N.Y.) (4-5 2B, R, RBI) doubled to left field for his second hit of the afternoon. Sophomore
Jayson Rodopoulos (Scarsdale, N.Y.) (2-5 AB, HR, R, 2RBI) blasted a home run to left field for his first home run of the season to put the Knights up 2-0. The Knights would extend the advantage to 3-0 following a single by freshman
Evan Christopher (North Babylon, N.Y.) (2-2 AB, R, RBI, BB) but would advance to third as the Saints left fielder misplayed the ball, before freshman
Jordan Ramlogan (Hicksville, N.Y.) (2-4 AB, 2B, 3RBI) reached first base following an error by the Saints shortstop to score Christopher from third.
Fazah entered the Queens College Baseball record book as he worked a rare three-pitch fifth inning as he got the first batter to ground out to shortstop before the next batter grounded out to the catcher. The Queens native would complete the rare inning as he got the third batter to fly out in right field to end the inning. It is the first time in Knights' history that a pitcher has completed a three-pitch inning.
Feeding off of their starter, the offense clicked into high gear as they tallied five runs on six hits to take an 8-0 lead as freshman
Teovaldo Estevez (Bronx, N.Y.) (1-4 AB, R) started the inning with a single to left field. Next at-bat freshman
Andrew Smith (Hampton Bays, N.Y.) (2-5 AB, 2B, 2RBI, R) opened the fifth frame scoring with his first career triple to right field as Estevez plated home. Classmate
Brad Sakellarides (East Moriches, N.Y.) (2-4 AB, 2R, RBI, BB) continued the scoring with a RBI single to left-center as the Knights took a 5-0 lead. The Knights would go up 6-0 as Christopher plated Sakellardies home with a RBI single through the left side. Ramlogan posted a game-high three RBI with his second hit of the afternoon and first career double with a two-RBI double down the left-field line to effectively put the game out of reach as the Knights took a commanding 8-0 lead after five innings of play.
Queens would close out the scoring with two runs in the bottom of the eight as giving the Knights a 10-1 game one victory and Fazah's first win of the season.
Game Two: Queens 6, D'Youville 2
In the nightcap, the Knights jumped out to a 1-0 lead as Rodopoulos (1-2 AB, 2R, BB) started the second inning with a single up the middle. After having made two pinch-hit appearances in the season, freshman
Daniel Deutsch (Northport, N.Y.) (1-2 AB, 2RBI) earned his first career start in the game two starting line-up. After Rodopoulos stole second, the Northport native fought a nine-pitch at-bat for his first career RBI as he drove home Rodopoulos with a single to center field.
The Saint answered back in the third frame as they tallied Knights game two starter
Dylan Hughes (Merrick, N.Y.) (1-1, 4.0 IP, 5H, 2R, ER, 2K) for two runs on two hits to take their first lead of the day. But the lead was short-lived as the Knights responded quickly in the home half of the third. Estevez (1-4 AB, HR, R, RBI) recorded his second long ball of the season as he blasted a solo shot to left field to tie the game (2-2).
The Knights would take the lead for good in the bottom of the fourth inning with a three-run fourth inning for a 5-2 lead. After Rodopoulos worked a walk to the start off the fourth and stole second base for the second time on the day, junior
Corey Tingo (Selden, N.Y.) (1-2 AB, R) singled to left field to put runners on the corner. Freshman
Nick Barreiros (Seaford, N.Y.) (1-3 AB, R, RBI, SB) brought in the game-winning run with a RBI single to third base. The Knights would tally three more insurance runs to close out the game two scoring books.
Hughes picked up his first win of the season while senior
Dimitri Papazoglou (Bellerose, N.Y.) earned his first save of the season as he kept the Saints hitless in three innings of work while striking two to seal the 6-2 Queens victory.
Prior to Friday's afternoon home East Coast Conference (ECC) doubleheader against the Saints, the Queens College Baseball Knights recognized the ECC officiating crew in support of the efforts of D2 CCA and D2 ADA to recognize the P2R Officials' Appreciation Week for spring sports.
UP NEXT: Queens concludes the three-game series against the Saints tomorrow afternoon at Hennekens Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
