FLUSHING, N.Y. – Returning to Fitzgerald gym, the Queens College volleyball team (2-11, 1-3 ECC) dropped a three-set match
(25-20, 25-21, 25-12) to Mercy College Mavericks (7-7, 3-0) Tuesday night in East Coast Conference play.
How it Happened
- In the first set, Queens found themselves in a 13-4 hole before they rallied back as freshman Christina Franco's (Lynbrook, N.Y.) tallied back-to-back kills to stop the bleeding.
- Trailing 20-11, the Knights went on a 4-0 run led by junior Dee-Ana Mitchell (Middle Island, N.Y.) to cut the score down to 20-15 but the home side would fall short to drop the first set 25-20.
- Queens found themselves trailing 6-0 in the early going as the Knights committed five errors to force a time out.
- Using the timeout the Knights went on an 8-2 run to knot the second set 8-8 as Mitchell led the way three straight service aces forcing a Mavericks timeout.
- But Mercy would use their timeout to their momentum to take a 14-10 lead.
- Queens would get within two (18-16) before the visitors went on a 3-0 run before closing the second set 25-21 to take a commanding 2-0 set lead.
- The Knights would come out in the third set flat as the Mavericks built another 4-0 lead to start the set forcing another early Queens timeout.
- But Queens found themselves in a 13-2 deficit that they would be unable to recover from as the Knights were swept 3-0 Tuesday night dropping the last set 25-12.
By the Numbers
- Franco led the offense with eight kills (team-high) and nine digs, while Mitchell and sophomore Alexis Deodat (Riverview, FL) tallied four kills with the former leading the way with a game-high four service aces.
- Sophomore Leila Hadjeb (Queens, N.Y) notched a team-high 14 digs on the night.
UP NEXT: Queens heads to Rochester, N.Y. on Sunday (Oct. 10) for an East Coast Conference showdown against Roberts Wesleyan College Redhawks. First serve is set for noon inside Voller Athletic Center.
