Knights Volleyball Wins ECC Match On The Road

ROCHESTER, N.Y.– The Queens College volleyball team (3-11, 2-3 ECC) snapped a two-game losing streak as the Knights won a three-setter (28-26, 25-22, 25-23) against Roberts Wesleyan College Redhawks (1-16, 0-6 ECC) Sunday afternoon in East Coast Conference action inside Voller Athletic Center.

Sunday win saw the Knights snap a four-game losing against the Redhawks and earn the Knights their first ECC road win since the 2017 season in which Queens defeated Roberts Wesleyan 3-1.

How it Happened
  • In the first set, both teams traded points before Queens pushed ahead 17-14 to force a Roberts Wesleyan timeout. But undone by five straight errors, the home side claimed a 19-17 lead forcing a Queens timeout.
  • After an attacking error by sophomore Alexis Deodat (Riverview, FL) put the Redhawks one point away (24-22) from clinching the first set, Queens took their last timeout.
  • But Queens would tie the first set 24-24 as Roberts Wesleyan committed back-to-back errors. After Freshman Christina Franco (Lynbrook, N.Y.) tallied one of her seven kills to continue the first set, the home side would commit two more errors giving Queens the first set 28-26 and a 1-0 lead.
  • Queens found themselves trailing 5-1 forcing an early timeout. Out of the timeout, the Knights would rally back to tie the second set 7-7.
  • But with neither side able to pull away, both sides continued to trade leads with the second set being tied eight times.
  • The Knights would take advantage of Redhawks' errors before a kill by Deodat put the visitors up 24-22 before Roberts Wesleyan committed another error giving Queens a 2-0 set lead.
  • The third set saw six lead changes and a tied score nine times as both teams continued to answer each other's run.
  • With the third set tied 17-17, the Redhawks went on a 3-0 run forcing a Queens timeout. Out of the timeout, the Knights went on a 6-3 run behind led by Franco and junior Dee-Ana Mitchell (Middle Island, N.Y.) to tie the third set 23-23.
  • Sophomore Leila Hadjeb (Queens, N.Y) put the Knights up 24-23 with a service ace before an error by the home side gave Queens the third set 25-23 win and their first sweep over Roberts Wesleyan since 2015.
By the Numbers
  • Mitchell led the offense with a game-high nine kills, while Franco tallied seven kills and team-high 13 digs on the day.
  • Deodat and freshman Anjeline Arnakis contributed with eight and six kills.
  • Sophomore Jorden Warthen tallied 29 assists to go with three digs and one service ace.
Head Coach Stefan Leger Post Game Statement: "We took a positive step towards our goal of reaching the playoffs with this win over Roberts. The team played well as a unit and were able to make difficult plays easy at significant moments to allow us to come away with the victory. The defense helped our attack flow with a lot of digs during long rallies to keep us in each set. We look forward to our match against Molloy and continuing our good form during that contest."

UP NEXT:  Action returns to Flushing on Wednesday as Molloy College Lions come to town in ECC showdown. First serve is slated for 7:00 p.m.
