Knights Volleyball Drop Tough Four-Setter at Home

Prior to the start of Wednesday's match, the Queens College volleyball team and team captains Mitchell and Arnakis recognized the ECC officiating crew in honor of ECC Officials Appreciation Week.

FLUSHING, N.Y. – On Wednesday evening, the Queens College volleyball team (3-12, 2-4 ECC) gave the defending East Coast Conference champions Molloy College Lions (9-9, 4-2 ECC) all they could handle but the Knights would fall in a tough 3-1 (16-25, 12-25, 26-16, 25-19) loss in East Coast Conference action at Fitzgerald Gymnasium.

How it Happened
  • In the first set, both sides would exchange leads in the early going before the visitors went on a 4-0 run to take a 9-7 lead.
  • But the Knights would battle back and get within one (13-12) following a kill by junior Genesis Soto ((San Juan, Puerto Rico). However, the Lions would close the first set with a 9-3 run to take a 1-0 set lead.
  • Queens would come out flat in the second set as Molloy served up six service aces to take the second set 25-12 and take commanding 2-0 set lead.
  • The third set would see a total of six lead changes and eight ties before the Knights took the third set from the visitors.
  • It was a back and forth affair in the early going before the Lions went ahead 12-10. But Queens would put together a 7-0 run led by two service aces from senior Danielle Naggar (Flushing, N.Y.) to take a 17-12 lead.
  • With the Lions flustered, freshman Christina Franco (Lynbrook, N.Y.) tallied five of game-high 12 kills as the Knights took the third set 25-16 to cut the deficit down to 2-1.
  • In the fourth set with the score tied 4-4, Molloy went on a 5-1 run forcing a Queens timeout.
  • The Knights continued to fight back and stayed within one point with the hopes of taking the match into a deciding fifth set.
  • But the Lions' offense would prove too much as the visitors closed out the fourth set on a 5-1 run to take the match 3-1 with a 25-19 set win.
By the Numbers
  • The Knights ended a run of six-straight sweeps against the Lions as they took the Wednesday match into a four-set since the 3-1 loss back on November 1, 2016.
  • Queens out attacked Molloy 44-37 in kills but the home side committed 29 attacking errors to the visitors 15 errors in the loss.
  • Franco tallied her fourth double-double of the season with 12 kills and 16 digs while freshman Despina Boudouris (Merrick, N.Y.) notched her third double-double of the season with 30 assists and career-high 13 digs
  • Sophomore Alexis Deodat (Riverview, FL) and freshman Anjeline Arnakis (Bayside, N.Y.) combined for seven blocks on the night.
