FLUSHING, N.Y. – Junior outside-hitter
Dee-Ana Mitchell (Middle Island, N.Y.) led the Queens College volleyball team
(3-13 overall) with a game-high 13 kills on Tuesday night as the Knights fell in three-set at Fitzgerald Gymnasium to the College of Saint Rose Golden Knights
(7-13 overall) in non-conference action. The set scores were 26-24, 25-21, 25-23.
How it Happened
- In a match that saw twists and turns at every corner, the Knights came strong in the first set as they took an early 5-2 lead.
- But the Golden Knights would not let the lead grow any further as the first set saw the score tied on nine occasions.
- After a kill by freshman Christina Franco (Lynbrook, N.Y.) put the Knights up 18-16, the visitors went on a 5-1 run to take a 21-19 lead.
- But three straight errors by Saint Rose would put Queens up 22-21 before the visitors would rally back to retake the lead.
- After a kill by Mitchell tied the score at 24-24, Queens was unable to close out the first set after a service error and a Valeria Jorge kill gave Saint Rose a 26-24 first set win.
- Queens came out strong in the second set as they took a 4-0 lead following two service aces from Franco but Saint Rose tallied eight straight points to take an 8-4 lead before a kill by Mitchell stopped the bleeding.
- But the Golden Knights would continue building their lead with another 5-0 run.
- The Knights would attempt a comeback but the deficit would be too much as Queens went down 25-21 in the second set to trail 2-0 in the match.
- Queens would build a 5-2 advantage to start the third set but Saint Rose was not going away without a fight.
- With the Knights holding a 12-7 lead, the Golden Knights used three errors to tie the third set at 12-12.
- Queens would jump ahead 17-14 before Saint Rose fought back to tie the score once again.
- The third set saw eight ties but the Knights struggled would struggle once more to close out the set and fall 3-0 on the night with a 25-23 third set loss.
By the Numbers
- Mitchell led both teams with a game-high 13 kills but fell two short of a double-double as she tallied eight digs and two service aces.
- Franco tallied 12 digs but would fall short of her fifth career double-double as she tallied nine kills and three service aces.
- Freshman Despina Boudouris (Athens, Greece) notched her second straight double-double with 23 assists and 11 kills.
- While senior Danielle Naggar (Flushing, N.Y.) tallied back-to-back performances with double-digit digs with a career-high 18 digs on the night.
UP NEXT: The Knights return to East Coast Conference action with a trip to Western New York as they start the upstate trip with a matchup against Daemen College Wildcats (13-7 overall, 6-0 ECC). First serve set for 6:00 p.m.
