BUFFALO, N.Y. – Bitten by injuries, the Queens College volleyball team dropped two East Coast Conference matches in their Upstate New York trip.
The Knights
(3-15 overall, 2-6 ECC) were swept by Daemen College Wildcats
(14-7 overall, 7-0 ECC) who continued their unbeaten streak in conference play with a 3-0 win over the Knights Friday night.
The set scores were 25-7, 25-12, 25-18.
The action continued into Saturday afternoon but the Knights were unable to close each set they fell 3-0 against D'Youville College
(3-15 overall, 2-5 ECC). The set scores were 25-23, 25-22, 25-21.
How it Happened vs. Daemen College (Oct. 22, 2021)
- The Knights never got going in the first set and with the Wildcats offense on fire, Queens went down 25-7 in the first set.
- The second set brought no luck for the luck as they quickly went down 8-0 before a kill from sophomore Alexis Deodat (Riverview, FL) stopped the bleeding.
- Queens would use a 4-0 run to get back in the match but would still trail 10-5. But the Wildcats offense was too much for the Knights as the Knights found themselves down 2-0 with a 25-12 second set loss.
- Queens would trade points in the early going and tied the third set 12-12. But a Wildcats 4-0 run would push the home side to a 16-12 lead before closing the third set with a 25-18 victory over the Knights with a 3-0 win.
By the Numbers
- Four Knights combined for 12 kills on the day.
- Sophomore Leila Hadjeb (Queens, N.Y) led the Knights with a team-high nine digs.
- Senior Melody Pabon (Bronx, N.Y.) made her first career start and tallied eight digs in the match.
How it Happened vs. D'Youville College (Oct. 23, 2021)
- Both sides traded points in the latter stage but it was the Saints who took full advantage as they closed out the first set on a 4-1 run to go up 1-0 with a 25-23 win.
- The Saints controlled the second set and never let go.
- Trailing 22-16, the Knights attempted a comeback as they got within two (24-22) but it would be the closest they would manage and trailed 2-0 following a 25-22 second set loss.
- Both sides would once again trade points in the early before the Knights took an 8-7 lead.
- Trailing 12-10, the Knights went on a 5-0 run to take a 15-12 lead but the Saints answered back with a 10-2 run of their own to lead 22-17.
- Queens would muster back to trail by two (23-21) but would run of room to make any attempt of a comeback and fall 3-0 with a 25-21 in the third set.
By the Numbers
- Junior Genesis Soto (San Juan, Puerto Rico) and freshmen Anjeline Arnakis (Bayside, N.Y.) led the Knights with a combined 16 kills on the day.
- Hadjeb tallied a team-high 19 digs on the day.
UP NEXT: Queens returns to Flushing on Tuesday (Oct. 26) as the University of Bridgeport Purple Knights come to town. First serve set for 7:00 p.m.
