FLUSHING, N.Y. – On Tuesday night, the Queens College volleyball team
(3-16 overall, 2-7 ECC) gave it their all but fell to the University of Bridgeport Purple Knights
(13-8 overall, 6-2 ECC) in East Coast Conference action at Fitzgerald Gymnasium.
Freshman
Christina Franco (Lynbrook, N.Y.) and sophomore
Alexis Deodat (Riverview, FL) combined for 15 kills but were unable to force a deciding fifth set as they fell to the set scores of
8-25, 26-24, 17-25. 12-25.
How it Happened
- Both sides exchanged points in the early going as Queens kept the score close trailing by two (9-7) but with the Bridgeport hitting over .300% in the first set, the Purple Knights were able to pull away.
- An 8-0 run by the Purple Knights combined with the Knights hitting -.292%, the home side would go down 25-8 in the first set.
- The second set saw the score tied six times but the home side capitalized on 13 errors to take the second set from Bridgeport.
- Leading 8-7, the Knights went on a 7-1 run to take their biggest lead (15-8) of the evening to force a Purple Knights timeout.
- But the visitors would not go down without forcing Queens to dig deep as they looked to the tie match.
- With the second tied 24-24, Franco would put the Knights one point away from tying the match before sophomore Leila Hadjeb (Queens, N.Y) served an ace to seal the 26-24 second set win to tie the match 1-1.
- With the third set tied 3-3, Bridgeport used a 6-0 run to force a Queens timeout.
- but the visitors' offense would prove to be too much as Amanda Keller and Amanda Hennemann combined for 11 kills as the visitors took the third set 25-17 to take a 2-1 lead.
- Tied 5-5, Bridgeport would once again use another big run to pull away as they took an 11-6 lead forcing a Queens timeout.
- Still within striking distance of forcing a deciding set, the Knights were undone by attacking errors as the Purple Knights took the match 3-1 with a 25-12 fourth set victory.
By the Numbers
- Despite the four-set loss, Queen ended a streak of seven straight sweeps by winning by the second set over Bridgeport since the Knights swept the visitors at home back on October 27, 2016.
- Franco fell short of a double-double as the Lynbrook native tallied nine kills on team-high 34 attempts and combined team-high 17 digs.
- Deodat and freshman Anjeline Arnakis (Bayside, N.Y.) combined for 11 kills and three blocks.
- Hadjeb tallied a team-high three service aces, while sophomore Jordan Warthen (Baldwin, N.Y.) notched 23 assists and seven digs on the night.
UP NEXT: Queens returns to the road to conclude October in Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. against the Mavericks of Mercy College (10-12 overall, 5-2 ECC) at Victory Hall Gym. First serve set for 7:00 p.m.
