DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. – Continuing East Coast Conference action, the Queens College volleyball team
(3-17, 2-8 ECC) put together a strong effort against the Mavericks of Mercy College
(11-12, 6-2 ECC) at Victory Hall Gym Thursday evening.
Three Knights combined for 18 kills but the Knights were unable to avoid the sweep and fell for the seventh straight match against the Mavericks. The set scores were
25-16, 26-24, 25-19.
How it Happened
- Queens opened the match on a strong note, with the score tied 6-6, junior Genesis Soto (San Juan, Puerto Rico) gave the Knights a 5-1 run with two kills and an ace forcing a Mercy timeout with Queens leading 11-7.
- The Mavericks would use the timeout to their advantage and squeeze the momentum out of the Knights' hand as they closed the first set on an 18-5 run.
- Trailing 1-0, Queens opened the second set on a 3-0 run before Mercy fought back to exchange points.
- Tied 13-13, the Knights led by sophomore Leila Hadjeb (Queens, N.Y) used a 7-2 run to take a 20-15 lead forcing Mercy to take a timeout.
- Out of the timeout, Mavericks went on a 6-3 run to trim Queens lead down to 23-21 forcing Queens to use a timeout to stop the home side momentum.
- The timeout seemed to have worked as a Mavericks service error put the Knights one point (24-21) away from tying the match 1-1.
- But the Knights were unable to close out the set as the Mavericks went on a 5-0 run to take a commanding 2-0 set lead with a 26-24 second set win.
- Queens would come out with another strong effort to begin the third set as they led 5-2 before the Mavericks fought back.
- Tied 7-7, Mercy jumped ahead 12-8 on a 5-1 run forcing Queens to use a timeout to stop the bleeding.
- The Knights would use the timeout to their advantage as they went on a 7-3 run to tie the third set 15-15.
- Combined with three errors, the Mavericks jumped to a 21-16 advantage forcing the coaching staff to use their last timeout to stop the run.
- Queens were unable to use the timeout to their advantage and fell 25-19 for a 3-0 set loss.
