FLUSHING, N.Y. – On Sunday afternoon the Queens College volleyball team
(3-18, 2-9 ECC) senior day was spoiled as the Knights dropped an East Coast Conference contest to the Roberts Wesleyan College Redhawks
(3-21, 2-10 ECC).
Before the first serve, the Knights honored their four graduating seniors
Melody Pabon (Bronx, N.Y.),
Danielle Naggar (Flushing, N.Y.),
Genesis Soto (San Juan, Puerto Rico), and
Dee-Ana Mitchell (Middle Island, N.Y.)
Despite double-doubles from freshman
Christina Franco (Lynbrook, N.Y.) who tallied a match-high 14 kills and 18 digs, and Mitchell 12 kills and 12 digs, the Knights were unable to avoid a sweep to the Redhawks. The set scores were
25-23, 25-20, 25-22.
How it Happened
- Both teams exchanged points in the early going before Roberts Wesleyan went on a 6-0 run to take a 14-11 lead.
- A service ace by Soto would tie the first set at 15-15 before the visitors went on a 5-2 run forcing a Knights timeout.
- Trailing 17-20, Franco tallied a hattrick of kills to tie the first set 20-20. Following a Redhawks timeout, the visitors would take a 1-0 set lead with a 25-23 first set victory.
- Roberts Wesleyan jumped out to a 9-4 second set lead forcing Queens to burn an early timeout.
- Down 14-10, the Knights would tie the second set with a 5-1 run before Redhawks used a 5-2 run of their own to take a 21-17 lead.
- Despite taking the timeout to stop the run, the Knights were unable to come back and would trail 2-0 with a 25-20 second set loss.
- It was another back and forth set with neither team able to completely pull away in the early going in the third set.
- With the third set tied 14-14, it was the Redhawks who took full advantage of miscues as Lauren Norwood served up two aces to put the visitors up 17-14.
- But after a Mitchell kill brought the Knights within two (22-20), the Redhawks would spoil senior day for Mitchell and her teammates sweep the Knights 3-0 for series split.
By the Numbers
- Franco tallied her fifth double-double of her career with 14 kills and 18 digs, making it the sixth consecutive game she has tallied 12 or more digs.
- Mitchell tallied her second double-double of the season with 12 kills and 12 digs.
- Naggar notched a career-high 23 digs in her last ECC game in Flushing.
