Women’s Tennis at St. Thomas Aquinas College Preview

FLUSHING, N.Y.- The Queens College women's tennis team concludes the road portion of the 2021 schedule with a trip to Sparkill, N.Y. as they take on St. Thomas Aquinas College Spartans Friday afternoon at Riley Family Tennis Courts.
 
The Knights are 21-1 in the overall series dating back to the 2002-03 season as the Knights saw a 20-game win streak come to end in a heartbreaking 4-3 loss at home on April 25, 2021. In a series dominated home and away, the 2021 two regular-season matches were the two closest matches in program history. Queens would return to the win column in the East Coast Conference Championship game with a 4-0 sweep to earn their second straight championship.

The Knights successfully defended their 2019 ECC crown with a 4-0 sweep over the Spartans. The Knights took the double points as the sophomore doubles pair of Gabriela Sciarotta (Woodmere, N.Y.) / Aleksandra Caricic (New York, N.Y.) continued their winning way at the No. 3 doubles court as they dispatched the Spartans duo of Karina Blas / Eliza Mulder to the score of 6-3. 
 
The Knights No. 2 doubles duo of sophomore Lilly Schmidt (Montabaur, Germany) / junior Nathalie Ulander (Stockholm, Sweden) would clinch the doubles points with a 6-2 victory over Spartans Jemima Parkinson / Ayesha Burnet. 
 
Maja Makal (Bialystok, Poland)  quickly put the Knights up 2-0 as she defeated Blas in straight sets to the score of 6-2, 6-3 at the No. 1 singles slot to continue her undefeated streak on the season. At the No. 4 singles spot, Sciarotta found herself trailing 4-1 in the first set but stayed composed through the match as she rallied back to win the first win set 7-5 against Parkinson. With her confidence riding high, the Woodmere native got into cruise control as she made quick work of Parkinson to put the Knights in a commanding 3-0 lead with a 6-2 second set victory. 
 
Needing one more match to clinch their second straight conference title, the Knights No.2 singles player Ulander won the first set 6-4 against Pavlovets. But Pavlovets took the match into the third set with a 6-2 second set victory. Ulander quickly went up 3-0 in the tiebreaker before Pavlovets cut the deficit down to 3-2. But the Sweden native would book the Knights ticket to the NCAA Championships with a 6-2 third set victory setting off a huge celebration inside the QC Tennis courts.
 
Scouting Queens College Knights 
 
The Knights are 3-1 overall, 2-1 in conference play, and are riding a three-game winning streak with including back-to-back conference wins over Daemen and D'Youville. Sciarrotta earned her second straight weekly honor roll spot as she went 4-0 in the Knights 2-0 trip over the weekend. She picked up two singles victory at the No. 2 slot to move her conference record to 3-0 in singles play.

Scouting STAC 
 
The Spartans are 5-1 overall, 2-1 in conference play, and are riding a five-game winning streak. Villegas Robles went 6-1 overall last week (2-1 singles, 4-0 doubles) as the Spartans picked up wins over Jefferson, Le Moyne, Daemen, and D'Youville. She won the clinching point at No. 4 singles versus previously undefeated Le Moyne. Elita Silins went 7-0 overall last week (3-0 singles, 4-0 doubles). She won the clinching point versus Daemen with a win at No. 4 singles. Silins won at No. 2, 4, and 5 singles, was 3-0 at No. 2 doubles, and 1-0 at No. 1 doubles.
 
Next Match-up: The Knights are back to Flushing in the regular-season finale of the 2021 season as Molloy College Lions come to town. First serve set for 11:00 a.m.
