FLUSHING, N.Y. (Mar. 7, 2020) - An eight-run seventh inning blew the doors open and gave the Queens College baseball team much-needed breathing room as the Knights rolled to a 13-4 victory against Southern Connecticut on Saturday (Mar. 7) at Hennekens Stadium in Flushing.
Sal Geraci had three hits and drove in five runs for Queens (4-5) in the win while
Louis Antos and
Eric Roubal each laced three hits as well. Antos drove in two runs on the afternoon as did freshman shortstop
Tim Saulpaugh, who had two clutch hits in the No. 9 spot in the batting order for the Knights.
Rob Backus pitched a strong five-and-two-thirds innings for the Knights, striking out seven batters to earn the victory with
Dimitri Papazoglou and
Joshuel Rodriguez holding the Owls to just two runs on two hits the rest of the way.
Queens led by a 2-0 score after the first inning on a bloop single by
Joe O'Rourke and an RBI double off the bat of Geraci. Backus held Southern Connecticut to just a pair of base hits through five innings and got added run support in the bottom of the fifth with a run-scoring single from Antos and a sacrifice fly off the bat of Geraci. After the Owls cut the deficit in half in the top of the sixth, QC made it a three-run game as Saulpaugh scampered home on a passed ball in the next frame. Geraci would have three runs batted in as the Knights batted around in the bottom of the seventh inning---book-ending the rally with an RBI double and a two-run single with Saulpaugh also putting up a two-run single with the bases loaded in the frame.
Queens heads to West Haven Sunday (Mar. 8) to face Southern Connecticut in a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m.
