FLUSHING, N.Y. (Mar. 2, 2020) - A first-inning unearned run was all that starting pitcher
Dimitri Papazoglou would allow as the Queens College baseball team backed up his pitching performance with an offensive outburst in a 13-1 victory for the Knights over Nyack College on Monday (Mar. 2) at Hennekens Stadium.
Queens is now 3-4 on the year with the win while Nyack falls to 0-3 on the season with the loss.
After the visitors took a 1-0 lead on the strength of two errors and an RBI groundout by catcher Neal Ring, the Knights evened the score in the bottom of the second inning.
Anthony Scotti led off the frame with a double down the third-base line and scored on a two-out fielding error as
Jayson Rodopoulos reached thanks to a miscue by Nyack shortstop Dylan Ahmad. Four more run scored in the bottom of the third with two errors by Nyack leading to two more runs apiece, each with two outs.Â
The 5-1 lead was extended to 7-1 in the bottom of the fifth inning on a two-run double by
Louis Antos as the third baseman drove a sizzling line drive over the head of center-field replacement Isaiah Ausby. Queens tacked on another run in the sixth, four more in the seventh and one in the eighth on an RBI single from
Jon Strauss to close the scoring account.
Papazoglou was brilliant in picking up the win for Queens, pitching five innings of four-hit ball with six strikeouts for the win. Four relievers---
Dylan Hughes,
Nick Font,
Danny Gargano and
Stephen Castro---each pitched a scoreless inning of relief with seven combined strikeouts.
Matt Encizo had three hits for Queens as the team coupled together 13 base hits on the afternoon; Rodopoulos, Scotti and Strauss each collected two hits in the win for the Knights.
Queens returns to action Wednesday (Mar. 4) as the Knights travel to Pace University for a 2:30 p.m. contest with the Setters.
