FLUSHING, N.Y. (Feb. 6, 2020) - After a collegiate soccer career with a number of stops that ended in Flushing, Queens College men's soccer alumnus
Romario Hulea will continue to ply his craft in the professional ranks as the midfielder/forward has signed a contract to play for IS Halmia in Sweden's fourth-level professional league.
Hulea's journey to IS Halmia began with a stop at Suffolk County Community College where he won a national championship under the coach that would be his mentor at his first and last stop, QC Head Men's Soccer Coach
Frank Vertullo. Hulea was also a member of Santa Monica College's team and spent a year as a reserve at Division I San Jose State before playing two years with Queens where he scored 11 career goals and was a 2018 All-East Coast Conference Third-Team honoree.
"I am extremely proud of Romario for signing his first professional contract," Vertullo said recently. "I know he has wanted this since the day he set foot on the Suffolk CC campus. It is never easy to get a contract in any country, it takes an enormous amount of work and determination and I'm so happy that it has paid off for him. I know with continued focus and growth he will have a tremendous career. I wish him all the best and I'm sure he knows the Suffolk and Queens families are always with him."
Labeled a "fast, hard-working forward with a nose for goals," Hulea was credited by the IS Halmia staff for his leadership capabilities and his work ethic. Hulea has been with the team in Halmstad, Sweden since Jan. 20 through training and recruiting.
