Schulte Scores Emotional Three-Set Win in #QCMTEN's Victory Over Stonehill

FLUSHING, N.Y. (Feb. 29, 2020) - The match on Saturday (Feb. 29) may have already been decided with Queens knocking Stonehill from the ranks of the unbeaten in an East region men's tennis contest. The Knights had won all three doubles matches and five of the six singles flights, but the action on Court 6 was still ongoing as the team moved to rally compatriot Julius Schulte in his bout with Skyhawks freshman Ben Simmons.

Schulte needed all the emotion, guts and gusto to complete a three-set win over Simmons as the Knights completed a 7-0 sweep of Stonehill, moving Queens to a 4-1 record on the year and dropping the Skyhawks to a 5-1 mark.

The Edinboro transfer won at sixth-singles by a 7-5, 4-6, 1-0 (11-9) margin after a gutsy super-tiebreak that featured powerful, booming first serves and winners all around. The final point was won when Schulte dumped a backhand off the top of the net and down onto Simmons' side, an almost laughably ill-timed end to what was an incredible back-and-forth match-up between the two players. However, the win mattered more so to complete the seven-point run as the Knights had already taken care of business on the other courts.

First, it was Moritz Borges winning a 6-2, 6-0 match at the fourth-flight against Aaron Diamond. Minutes later, Lucas Demuth finished off a 6-1, 6-2 win at third-singles versus Samuel Miller while Hugo Evangelista de Andrade rolled to a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 5 singles against Manu Ravichandrakumar. Kareem Rashad (6-4, 6-1) and Tim Ostheimer (6-4, 6-4) won their matches at first- and second-singles, respectively, before Schulte's marathon win at sixth-singles.

The Knights went up 1-0 in the match by sweeping the doubles play: Demuth and Eduardo Marino won a 6-1 match at second-doubles with Borges and Rashad finishing a 6-3 win at the first tandem and Evangelista teaming with Ostheimer for a 7-6 (7-1) win at the third-spot.

Queens returns to action on Monday (Mar. 2) at 1 p.m. against Wagner College at the Queens College Tennis Center.
