Peay and XuanRui Lead #QCWBB in Penultimate Regular-Season Game Saturday At Mercy

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Feb. 22, 2020) – The Queens College women's basketball team could not play catch-up from an early hole as the Knights fell to Mercy by a 62-57 final score on Saturday (Feb. 22) at Victory Hall in Dobbs Ferry, N.Y.

The Knights fell to 7-18 on the season and 4-11 in East Coast Conference play while Mercy improved to 8-18 on the year and 2-13 in league action.

Tayanee Peay led the Knights with 15 points on the afternoon, adding four rebounds and three assists to a 7-for-16 shooting performance. Sophomore guard Hu XuanRui posted 12 points with five rebounds and three assists, hitting a team-best three shots from beyond the three-point line in the effort. Raiana Brown and Lucy Tougas scored eight points apiece but combined to shoot just 7-for-20 from the floor.

Destinee Hall's game-high 17 points paced Mercy to the victory while Amber Brown had 14 points and nine rebounds off the bench for the Mavericks. Katie Wall added 13 points in the victory for the home side.

The Knights never led in the contest despite keeping a close pace with Mercy, trailing by a 31-28 score at halftime. In the third quarter, the Knights trailed by three points at 40-37 before the Mavericks ended the frame on a 6-2 run to lead by a 46-39 margin going into the fourth quarter. QC cut the deficit down to three-points on a XuanRui three-point play with a minute to go in regulation, but the Mavericks eventually prevailed after free throws of their own.

Queens remains in the No. 6 seed in the East Coast Conference play-off picture as Bridgeport's loss to Molloy kept the Knights ahead of the Purple Knights and District of Columbia. QC will travel to Washington, D.C. on Wednesday (Feb. 26) to face the Firebirds at 5 p.m. in the Knights' regular-season finale.
