WASHINGTON, D.C. (Feb. 26, 2020) – The Queens College women's basketball team needed a victory Wednesday (Feb. 26) at District of Columbia to potentially cement an East Coast Conference postseason tournament berth.
A 10-2 run by the Firebirds, however, quickly squashed any March dreams as the Knights fell by a 69-46 score to UDC in QC's season finale at the UDC Gymnasium.
Queens, eliminated with the loss, finishes the season at 7-19 overall and 4-12 in East Coast Conference play. District of Columbia's win pushes the Firebirds to 8-19 on the year and 4-11 in ECC play with the Firebirds needing a win or a Bridgeport loss Saturday to earn the No. 6 seed in the upcoming conference tournament.
Raiana Brown finished the regular season with a flourish, scoring a team-high 19 points and adding 12 rebounds for her ninth double-double of her stellar rookie campaign. The North Babylon native went 6-for-12 from the floor and added four blocks while also hitting 7-of-11 from the free-throw line.
Lucy Tougas, meanwhile, poured in 10 points with four rebounds, three assists and three blocks on the night as
Brianne Moxley contributed eight points with four boards and three steals.
Alexus King's 20 points off the bench led all scorers while Maya Thomas added 15 points and Tyra Coombs accumulated 13 points and nine rebounds for UDC in the win.
The first bucket of the game was not converted until about two minutes into play as UDC's Halia Ellis hit a three-pointer to give the Firebirds the early lead. Following a Moxley jumper on the next possession, the hosts scored seven unanswered points with a three-ball from Coombs putting the stamp on the 10-2 spurt midway through the first period.
The Firebirds led 19-9 after one quarter but Queens chipped slowly away at the disadvantage, coming within a 24-19 deficit at the midway mark of the second quarter. UDC ended the half on an 11-3 run with King scoring the final five points of the period to give the Firebirds a 35-22 lead at halftime. The Knights were unable to get back within a single-digit deficit the rest of the way as the Firebirds went 28-for-64 (44%) from the field and 9-of-19 (47%) from three-point territory in the game. QC, meanwhile, was just 15-of-47 (32%) on shots from the floor hitting just one three-pointer in eleven attempts on the night.
