Queens College Completes Fitzgerald Gymnasium Renovation

Fitzgerald Gym, the headquarters for Athletics and Recreation and the home court of the Knights’ men’s and women’s basketball teams, has been undergoing transformational renovations over the past several months. Through the leadership of The Dormitory Authority of the State of New York (DASNY), the $10.5 million project encompassing 60,000 square feet was executed by Armstrong Roofing Corp.

The installation of a brand new roof involved a number of upgrades including, a full deck replacement, thermoplastic roofing, structural enhancements, acoustical metal deck, liquid membranes on the lower roofs and a new railing system. Internally, energy efficient lighting and broadcast lightning have been installed, improvements to the overall ventilation system were made and the ceiling was finalized with a fresh coat of paint. 

Broadcast lighting overlooking Lucille Kyvallos Court, will enhance television production and provide a new game day feel for student-athletes and spectators alike.  Finally, the 42,000 square feet of hardwood flooring have been returned to their luster and now include an international 3-point line to meet the recently approved NCAA men’s basketball rules. 

The completion of the project increases the college’s visibility and reputation in New York with a state of the art athletic, recreation, and academic facility that gives the building significance today and versatility for the future.
