STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. (Jan. 18, 2019) - Facing stiff competition in every event on Friday (Jan. 17), the Queens College track and field teams were among the throngs of competitors at the 2020 edition of the New York City Gotham Cup at the Ocean Breeze Track and Field Complex on Staten Island.
Bianca Hiltz put together a strong performance for the Knights in the field events, winning her heat of the long jump and finishing inside the top-15 with a leap of 4.88 meters. The freshman also showcased a top-ten performance in the triple jump, finishing ninth with a distance of 10.76 meters. Hiltz was fourth among Division II leapers in the triple jump competition and finished second among East Coast Conference competitors, with Georgian Court's Lyric Green winning the discipline by leaping 12.03 meters.
The men's team saw a strong performance from the 4x400-meter relay squad that has already qualified for the prestigious Millrose Games in February. The team of
Jahmel Maynor-Mendez,
Myles Jackson,
Hakeem Alexander-Blake and
Jeremy Herbert took home a fifth-place finish in a time of 3:26.68. The Knights had the top Division II relay in the meet and were the third-highest collegiate relay in the standings with two relays from Garden State Track Club (GSTC) finishing first and fourth. Maynor-Mendez finished third in his heat of the 60-meter dash with an overall time of 7.31 seconds while Jackson took 16th in the 1000-meter run (2:43.14) and 20th in the 400-meter dash (51.74s).
The Knights were also successful in the field events on the men's side; specifically,
Ooreofe Oluwadara was sixth in the long jump event (6.96m).
Andrew Saulpaugh took an eighth-place ranking in the men's weight throw (15.68m) and a top-25 performance in the men's shot put (12.19m). Meanwhile,
Daniel Diaz had an eighth-place shot put performance with a throw of 13.99 meters while teammate
Robert Skidmore placed inside the top-30 (11.49m).
Queens is next scheduled to compete on Friday, Feb. 7 at the UAlbany Winter Classic to be held at the Ocean Breeze Track and Field Complex.
