ROCHESTER, N.Y. (Jan. 12, 2020) - Thanks to a 30-point performance from junior guard
Elijah Bovell, one that included hitting 14 foul shots in the contest, the Queens College men's basketball team overcame a nine-point halftime deficit to outlast Roberts Wesleyan on Sunday (Jan. 12) by a final score of 87-84 in an overtime thriller at the Voller Athletic Center in Rochester.
The win puts Queens at 3-11 overall and 2-3 in East Coast Conference play while the Redhawks fall to 3-13 on the season and 0-5 in league competition.
Bovell hit just 7-of-20 from the field in the contest but was 8-of-9 from the foul line in the first half and a perfect 6-for-6 in the second half at the charity stripe.
Keenan Gorski and
David Grady III each added 11 points in the win, with the latter also recording six steals and eight rebounds as well.
Eddie Mehmetaj and
Shomari Redd collected eight points apiece for the Knights as the squad shot 5-of-8 from the floor in the five-minute overtime period.
Reggie Clark had 30 points to lead Roberts Wesleyan with a 27-point, 14-rebound performance from Armon Nasseri as well. The two combined to shoot 20-for-37 from the floor in the game; however, the rest of the team went just 7-for-25 in perimeter shooting.
Queens trailed 45-36 at the halftime break and fell behind by 16 points just three minutes into the second half of play before storming back to tie the game at 59-all with just under six minutes to go in regulation. The Knights led by a 70-67 margin in the dying seconds of the game before Clark buried a game-tying treble with 13 seconds to play; Bovell missed a jumper at the buzzer, sending the contest to an extra session. In the extra frame, the tide turned with two minutes remaining as Queens rolled on a 7-0 run with a lay-up by Redd and four straight points from
Tyrese Crosdale to give the Knights an 82-77 lead that would not be relinquished.
The Knights return home to face Mercy College on Wednesday (Jan. 15) at 7:30 p.m. in the North Gymnasium of Fitzgerald Hall.
