OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. (May 10, 2019) - Monday night's jubilation turned into Thursday afternoon's frustration and ultimately Friday morning's realization that the end of the line was upon the Queens College baseball team. With their 14-1 loss to NYIT in Old Westbury, the Knights were eliminated from the East Coast Conference Tournament after returning to the postseason for the first time since 1998.
QC starting pitcher
Dennis Buckstein lasted just three innings but struck out seven batters on the day; in doing so, Buckstein ran his season total on the strikeout meter to 89 and broke the single-season record for most strikeouts in a year that was set by QC Hall of Famer Louis DeBole in 1958 and Rod Stephan back in 1981.Â
The second-seeded Bears scored their runs in six different innings with the big blow coming in a five-run frame in the third inning. NYIT banged out 21 hits on the day while Queens was stymied by D.J. Masuck and Ariel Taveras.
Brian Watters---who had two of the Knights' six hits on the day---drove in the only run for QC in the contest with a sacrifice fly in the ninth inning.
Louis Antos had two hits as well with
Ron Linsalato and
Ronmel Ocampo also recording hits in the loss.
The Knights finish the year with a 25-24-1 overall record, their first winning season since that championship year that came 21 springs ago.
