BRONXVILLE, N.Y. (Apr. 10, 2019) - The Queens College men's tennis team was ranked No. 2 in the East Region by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) at the start of the calendar year. Ranked above them were the Clippers from Concordia College (N.Y.), a rival from the old New York Collegiate Athletic Conference (NYCAC) days. One year ago, the two teams battled in an epic five-hour marathon in Flushing that saw Concordia come away with a 6-3 victory.
The Knights were unable to avenge that loss this year, however, as the No. 29 Clippers claimed a 4-2 win in Bronxville.
Despite Nick Volos and
Kareem Rashad winning a 6-4 decision at the second-doubles tandem, the hosts claimed the overall doubles point.
Cosme Jubera and
Richard Sec were dispatched at the No. 1 spot by William Nilsson and Jan Godfrey Seno with
Hugo Evangelista de Andrade and
Lucas Demuth lost a 6-0 result at third-doubles to Michele Fenoaltea and Max Grundmann. Queens evened up the score in singles play with Rashad fighting for a 6-3, 6-3 decision at the second flight against Henry Masters, but the Knights would not score another point until the match had already been clinched.
Jubera was knocked down in first-singles by Eymeric Chevalier (6-4, 7-5) while Sec lost a gritty 6-4, 6-4 battle with Nilsson at No. 4.
Mariano Biblioni could not keep Seno from securing the overall victory at fifth-singles with a 6-2, 6-3 triumph favoring Concordia. Demuth, however, posted an upset win in third-singles beating Fenoaltea---the No. 41-ranked player in the country according to the ITA---via a 6-1, 7-6 (7-5) decision.
The Knights will travel up to Western New York this weekend to conclude East Coast Conference play and potentially secure the outright regular-season championship in the ECC. Queens will first take on Daemen on Friday (Apr. 12) at 7:30 p.m.
