WILLIAMSVILLE, N.Y. (Apr. 12, 2019) - The Queens College men's tennis team had little trouble with Daemen College on Friday (Apr. 12) evening, blitzing the WIldcats for a 7-0 victory in East Coast Conference action as the Knights secured at least a share of the ECC regular-season championship once again.
Queens (9-7, 4-0 ECC) can clinch the outright conference championship on Saturday (Apr. 13) with a win at Roberts Wesleyan in Rochester. The Knights won each match, sweeping singles play in straight sets over their opponents and winning all three doubles matches as well.
Cosme Jubera and RIchard Sec had the most strenuous evening of all for QC, beginning with a 7-6 tiebreak win at the top tandem of doubles over Jose Williamson III and Fabian Wilde. Queens would pick up 6-1 wins in second and third doubles as well;
Kareem Rashad and
Jose Zurro took care of Ricardo Ruiz Martinez and David Gonzalez Villegas while Stan Bedrune and
Camilo Arias triumphed against Justin Milner and Patrick O'Brien.
Jubera's 6-0, 6-2 win against Ruiz Martinez at the No. 1 spot of singles highlighted a strong effort from Queens that had only just begun. Rashad trumped Wilde in second-singles by a 6-2, 6-3 margin while Sec overpowered Gonzalez Villegas at the third flight (6-3, 6-1).
Mariano Biblioni easily handled O'Brien at fourth-singles (6-2, 6-3) with Nick Volos posting a 6-3, 6-3 win against Williamson at fifth-singles and
Hugo Evangelista de Andrade sending Milner packing at the No. 6 spot to the tune of a 6-2, 6-1 triumph.
The Knights will tangle with the Redhawks of Roberts Wesleyan at 12 p.m. Saturday to conclude the five-game ECC schedule for both teams.
