ROCHESTER, N.Y. (Apr. 13, 2019) - One day after clinching at least a share of the conference crown, the Queens College men's tennis team earned the East Coast Conference regular-season title outright and posted a 7-0 win against Roberts Wesleyan on Saturday (Apr. 13) in Rochester.
Queens (10-7, 5-0 ECC) claimed the doubles point over Roberts Wesleyan (11-8, 2-3 ECC) with hard-fought victories in each of the three tandems of play.
Cosme Jubera and
Lucas Demuth earned a 6-4 win at first-doubles to clinch the point after
Kareem Rashad and
Richard Sec won by the same 6-4 score at the second tandem just minutes earlier.
Mariano Biblioni and Nick Volos posted a 7-6 victory at third-doubles for good measure.
Biblioni won his singles match at No. 3 against Matthew Forrest to kick-start the Knights' run to the victory;
Camilo Arias then shined in a 6-0, 6-0 shutout of Joshua Moore at the sixth-flight. The clincher came at fifth-singles as
Jose Zurro overpowered Andrew Freeman in a 6-1, 6-1 decision. Demuth posted a 6-2, 6-1 win at second singles against Boyd Blackburn and Sec's 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 4 put Queens on the brink of a clean sweep. Jubera earned the final point for the Knights against RWC's Guido Janssen, as the two players went to a third-set pro-set tiebreak with Jubera winning a 13-11 decision.
Queens will settle in for postseason play next week but first will have a Wednesday afternoon (Apr. 17) contest at Post University in Waterbury, Conn. First serve is set for 3 p.m.
