FLUSHING, N.Y. (Mar. 30, 2019) - Despite it coming with the game already decided, freshman
Sarah Kasson's first career goal will be a moment that the Queens College women's lacrosse team won't soon forget.
The native of Vestal---a town just outside of Binghamton near the New York-Pennsylvania border---converted on a pass by
Lauren Gentile in the second half for Queens (1-9), which came up short by a 19-5 score to Saint Michael's College on Saturday (Mar. 30) at Knights Field.
Gentile and
Chloe Herzog also tallied goals for Queens while
Sarah Koehler had two markers for the Knights in the loss to St. Mike's (2-5). The visiting Purple Knights were led by an eight-point (four goals, four assists) performance from senior attacker Alex Vincent, while Kaelyn Oliver and Kaitlyn Waystack each had a pair of goals and assists. Erin Mikson also scored three goals for St. Michael's in the victory.
Jess Serpe made 11 saves in net for QC and scooped up a team-high five ground balls as both
Nicole Cutrone and
Shannon Gibbons each collected three ground balls. Gentile, Herzog, Kasson and Nikki Pravata caused two turnovers each while
Patriece Ausili won a team-high five draw controls.
The visitors scored the first six goals of the contest before Gentile's tally with seven minutes gone by in the opening half put Queens on the board. The Purple Knights put home six straight to end the first half up by a 12-1 margin. The sides traded a pair of goals to open the second half of play and St. Michael's took a 14-2 lead on a free-position goal with 18 minutes left on the clock. The ensuing draw was won by Ausili, and Gentile eventually had the ball in her cross and fed Kasson. The freshman whipped a left-handed shot past goalie Lucy Chin and into the net to set off the celebration.
After Koehler tallied a free-position goal just past the midpoint of play to bring Queens within a ten-goal deficit, St. Michael's scored five of the final six goals to cement the victory.
Queens will play an East Coast Conference contest on Wednesday (Apr. 4) at LIU Post in Brookville with the opening face-off set for 4 p.m.
