Comeback Bid Falls Short for Women's Lacrosse in 16-9 Defeat at Nyack

NYACK, N.Y. (Mar. 28, 2019) - Down nine goals early in the second half of action on Thursday (Mar. 28), the Queens College women's lacrosse team put forth a spirited charge that fell shy of the ultimate goal with the Knights losing a 16-9 decision to Nyack College at Moseley Field in non-conference play.

Sarah Koehler led Queens (1-8) with five goals while four other players---Patriece Ausili, Lauren Gentile, Shannon Gibbons and Chloe Herzog---each added a tally in the losing effort. Ausili won a team-high seven draw controls for the Knights and also picked up three ground balls. Lauren Hilke collected three ground balls in the midfield while Sarah Kasson had four ground ball pickups and four caused turnovers in the loss. Maggie Iavarone totaled two assists, as well, while Jess Serpe made 15 saves in net for the Knights and recorded seven ground balls on the day.

Nyack (3-5) was paced by a seven-goal performance from Julianna Kranes with Melissa Clapsaddle adding a hat trick and two assists. Shaylagh Devlin contributed two goals and six assists for the Warriors in the win.

The hosts scored the first three goals of the contest before Gentile got Queens on the board on a free-position attempt at the midpoint of the opening half. Following goals from Clapsaddle and Koehler on both sides, Nyack scored the next seven goals of the game in a stretch that went around 15 minutes of game time and saw the Warriors lead 11-2 early in the second half. Herzog tallied her lone goal on a feed from Iavarone with five-and-a-half minutes played in the period and the Knights registered six of the next nine goals to cut the deficit to a five-goal margin at 14-9 with less than eight minutes remaining. Unfortunately, Nyack's defense was resolute and held Queens off the board for the remainder of the contest as Jasmyne Moore and Isabella Thomas scored for the home side to produce the final margin.

Queens will host Saint Michael's on Saturday (Mar. 30) in a 1 p.m. contest at Knights Field.
