DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Mar. 24, 2019) - The Queens College baseball team left nine runners on base---seven of which came in the final five innings---and the Knights succumbed to Mercy College in a 3-2 ten-inning defeat in Dobbs Ferry on Sunday (Mar. 24).
Queens (11-8-1, 2-2 ECC) took an early 1-0 lead on Mercy (10-12, 2-2 ECC) in the top of the second inning.
Ron Linsalato drew a one-out walk and was advanced to third on a single by
Jesse Spellman.
Brian Watters then bounced into a fielder's choice, forcing Spellman out at second base but sending Linsalato home with the Knights' opening run. Mercy responded with two runs against QC starter
Jack Palma in the bottom of the frame; after a lead-off single by Nicolas Hagerty, Adonis Garcia---who homered twice on Saturday---launched a first-pitch triple to deep center field to even up the score. Palma settled down and retired the next three batters in order, but Ethan McMenamy's one-out sacrifice fly to center brought Garcia home with the Mavs' second run. Queens responded in the top of the fifth inning, as Linsalato and Spellman drew back-to-back walks to open the frame. Two batters later,
Nick Font drove in Linsalato on a sacrifice fly to center field that tied the game at 2-all.
The Knights had runners on base in each of the ensuing four innings but could not bring home the go-ahead run. QC's best chance came in the top of the ninth inning, as Spellman's one-out single set the table for walks to pinch hitter
Ronmel Ocampo and Font. The visitors could not convert, however, and Mercy would eventually pick up the win in the bottom of the tenth inning on a walk-off single by Joseph Sadallah.
Palma pitched a statement-making game for the Knights, going eight innings while yielding two runs on seven hits with four strikeouts over an economical 81-pitch outing.
James McGee was saddled with the loss for allowing the game-winning run in the tenth, but the righty reliever struck out five Mercy batters in his 1.2 innings of work. Spellman went 3-for-3 to continue a sensational rookie season for the Bayside native, while Matt Gutleber also recorded a two-hit game.
Queens returns to action on Friday (Mar. 29) when the Knights play host to NYIT at Hennekens Stadium. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
