WEST CALDWELL, N.J. (Mar. 19, 2019) - Six pitchers combined on a five-hit shutout and
Louis Antos cracked a two-run home run to lift the Queens College baseball team to a 6-0 win over Caldwell University on Tuesday (Mar. 19) at the Kiwanis Oval.
Queens (9-6-1) put at least one runner on base in each of the first three innings, but the Knights did not take the lead over Caldwell (2-6) in the third inning. After
Ron Linsalato led the inning off with a single, Antos lifted a Kenneth Matta offering over the center-field wall to put the Knights ahead by a 2-0 count. The Cougars, meanwhile, were stymied by the Knights' combined pitching excellence.
Bryan Krolikowski went the first two innings, yielding just one hit and striking out two batters;
Dylan Hughes tossed two perfect innings of relief and picked up the win.
Brandon Hoskins,
Adam Abreu,
Kevin Kochen and
James McGee continued the dominance on the mound as Queens scored four times in the eighth inning to ensure the victory.
In that eighth inning,
Joe O'Rourke connected for a lead-off single and was lifted for pinch-runner
Brian Wright. After Wright stole second,
Jayson Rodopoulos smacked a triple that brought home the Knights' third run of the game and broke open the floodgates. Reigning East Coast Conference Rookie of the Week
Jesse Spellman drove Rodopoulos in with a single on the very next at-bat to give QC a 4-0 lead. After
Nick Font drew a walk,
Jon Strauss rocketed a pitch to center field for a two-run triple that closed the scoring account.
Strauss went 3-for-5 with the two runs batted in as O'Rourke, Rodopoulos and Spellman each notched two-hit games in the win.
Queens will open up East Coast Conference play on Friday (Mar. 22) as the Knights travel to Dobbs Ferry to face the Mavericks of Mercy College. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
