FLUSHING, N.Y. (Mar. 18, 2019) - A ten-goal second half that included eight of the last ten goals lifted the Queens College women's lacrosse team to an 18-11 victory over Holy Family on Monday (Mar. 18) at Knights Field in Flushing.
Maggie Iavarone posted a nine-point outing for Queens, as the senior attacker had five goals and was a prominent distributor with four assists in the win.
Patriece Ausili added four goals and eight draw control victories (five of which came in the second half) and
Sarah Koehler collected a goal and five assists for the Knights.
Chloe Herzog scored three goals while
Lauren Gentile added a pair of markers and an assist;
Rebecca Gibble scored twice and
Shannon Gibbons contributed a goal and a helper in the victory.
The Knights were particularly staunch on defense in the second half, out-shooting Holy Family by a 23-15 margin and forcing the Tigers to commit 12 turnovers in the final half of regulation.
Jess Serpe made 17 saves in cage for the Knights and won a team-high eight ground balls while causing two of QC's nine total caused turnovers.Â
Queens trailed Holy Family at the half by a 9-8 margin, though the hosts closed with the final three goals of the opening period. Iavarone got the ball rolling in the second half with the tying goal just under two minutes into play and the teams traded goals to keep the score level at 10-10 at the mid-point of the half. Gibbons would put QC ahead for good on a free-position shot with 12:30 remaining in regulation and Ausili's goal about ninety seconds later gave the Knights an insurance marker. Gibble would then tally her first goal to give Queens a 13-10 lead that was short-lived as HFU's Casey Brown tacked on a goal to cut the deficit to a two-goal margin. Queens, however, stormed back to put home the final five goals of the game and earn the convincing victory.Â
The Knights are back in action on Wednesday (Mar. 20) in Flushing as Jefferson University visits Knights Field for a 3:30 p.m. contest.
