FLUSHING, N.Y. (Feb. 8, 2019) –
Kaitlyn Mahon's double-double (16 points, 10 assists) coupled with
My'eesa Grant's 17-point, 11-rebound performance and a strong shooting night from
Beth Bonin keyed the Queens College women's basketball team in an 84-78 double-overtime triumph over Roberts Wesleyan on Friday (Feb. 8) at Lucille Kyvallos Court at Fitzgerald Gymnasium.
Lucy Tougas nearly got in on the party for Queens (4-16, 3-9 ECC) as she ended her night just one rebound and one assist shy of a triple-double (12 points, nine rebounds, nine assists) as Bonin hit six three-pointers on her way to a 24-point evening.
Emer Moloney posted a six-point, nine-rebound effort as
Lakeisha Officer put in some key minutes in both overtime sessions with six rebounds and five points overall.
Tashayla Sutorius led Roberts Wesleyan (9-12, 5-6 ECC) with 23 points and eight rebounds in the loss. The Redhawks also had two players collect double-doubles with Emily Miller (19 points, 10 rebounds) and Taylor Bynoe (13 points, 10 rebounds) highlighting the evening for the visitors.
A sluggish first half (QC led 25-22 at the break) gave way to a strong third quarter from Roberts Wesleyan as the visitors went on a 7-0 run following a quarter-opening three-pointer from Bonin. Roberts, which had trailed 9-0 in the first quarter, took a 34-31 lead on a three-pointer by Jessie Cooke and a 40-35 advantage after Miller made a jumper with just over a minute to go in the period. Queens would rally back with an 8-3 run to tie the score at 43-all heading into the final quarter of regulation. The Redhawks nearly pulled away in the fourth quarter, as Taryn Wilson drilled a three-pointer to give Roberts a 59-55 lead with just 100 seconds to play; Grant and Tougas would both hit a pair of free throws down the stretch, and last-second efforts by Bynoe and Sutorius went unanswered as the two teams braced for overtime.
Queens led 67-62 in the first overtime period and 69-64 after a Tougas lay-up with over a minute to play, but Sutorius posted a 5-0 personal run including a three-point play with seven seconds to go that tied the affair at 69-all. Bonin's last-second effort for the win rolled around the rim but out to force a second overtime period. Mahon took over the game from there with six points in the frame, including the first four, to push the Knights to the victory.
Queens will host Daemen on Sunday (Feb. 10) at 1:30 p.m. in Flushing; it will be the Knights' Play4Kay game to support the Kay Yow Cancer Fund and kick off #KnightNation Cancer Awareness Week. The contest will also mark the first QC Community Day of the season, with a celebration of community and local education planned for the afternoon.
