Bonin Scores 1,000th Point But Women's Basketball Falls to Daemen, 64-50

FLUSHING, N.Y. (Feb. 10, 2019)Beth Bonin scored her 1,000th career point with a driving lay-up in the fourth quarter but the Queens College women's basketball team spent much of the contest stifled on offense as Daemen came away with a 64-50 win at Lucille Kyvallos Court at Fitzgerald Gymnasium on Sunday (Feb. 10).

Bonin had a team-best 11 points for QC (4-17, 3-10 ECC) as did freshman guard Maia Fawcett who scored 11 in 16 minutes of action. My'eesa Grant finished the game with nine points and ten rebounds while Emer Moloney added seven points.

Caroline White poured in a game-best 18 points off the bench for Daemen (13-8, 10-2 ECC), going 6-for-13 from the floor and hitting three shots from beyond the arc in the win. Tiara Filbert added 15 for the Wildcats and Erin Egan had 12 points. Ranaveya Richards added four points, three rebounds, three assists and two steals and held Bonin to just 5-for-11 from the field on defense.

The opening quarter started off with a back-and-forth affair as the teams sized each other up; Queens led 12-7 on a jumper by Moloney and a fast-break lay-up by Bonin with less than four minutes to go. The Wildcats, however, ended the quarter on an 8-1 run with threes from White and Katie Titus giving the visitors a 15-13 lead going into the second quarter. The run stretched out thanks to a 10-2 spurt by the Wildcats as Queens fell behind by a 25-15 margin midway through the second period. A jumper by Nora Gabel and a driving lay-up from Fawcett were the last two field goals made by the Knights as Queens went into the halftime break down by six points at 29-23.

Twice in the opening minutes of the third quarter, Queens came within a possession of tying the contest. Moloney drilled a three-pointer on the initial possession of the half but Filbert answered with a free throw for Daemen. Grant would score on a lay-up by White drilled a three-pointer; Lucy Tougas scored on a jumper but so did Egan. Back and forth the pendulum swung until Daemen slowly cruised forward to a 13-point lead at the inception of the final period. The 49-36 lead for the Wildcats held true and grew to a 20-point margin as Bonin corralled an offensive board with two-and-a-half minutes to go. The junior guard drove the lane and put a lay-up off glass and drew the foul, with the ball going through the hoop to set off an explosion of cheers from the crowd as Bonin scored her 1,000th career point.

The Knights will be in action on Wednesday (Feb. 13) against Mercy College at 7 p.m. at Fitzgerald Gymnasium. A pre-game ceremony will be held commemorating Bonin's career milestone while the Knights will be recognizing #KnightNation Cancer Awareness Week with a give-away of QC-branded stress hearts at the contest.
