BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (Feb. 16, 2019) - The Queens College men's basketball team could not get out of an early 7-0 hole on Saturday (Feb. 16) as the Knights fell to Bridgeport by an 86-58 score in an East Coast Conference contest at Harvey Hubbell Gymnasium.
Queens (7-18, 7-8 ECC) won the opening tip but it was Bridgeport (13-11, 8-6 ECC) that scored the first points as Vakas Iqbal drained a three-pointer for the hosts in the opening minute of play. UB led 17-9 at the midpoint on the strength of another three-ball by Iqbal but
Jelani Williams scored the next five points in a row to bring Queens within a 17-14 deficit. An 11-4 run by the Purple Knights over the next five minutes, however, spelled doom as QC could not keep up with the frenetic pace that Bridgeport was setting. The hosts went into the halftime break up by a 37-24 margin before pulling away to lead by as many as 33 points in the second half of the contest.
Williams (11 points) combined with
Elijah Bovell (11 points) and
Dwayne Henry Jr. (15 points) for much of the Knights' offense off the bench as the starting five managed just a total of 17 points in all.
Jordan Curtis had seven points, four rebounds and two assists for Queens in the loss.
Hashem Abbas had a game-high 17 points for Bridgeport with Iqbal adding 15 including a perfect 3-for-3 from beyond the three-point arc. Dennis Green contributed 16 points off the bench.
Queens will have a difficult match-up Wednesday (Feb. 20) as the Knights will host conference top-two seed contender Molloy at Fitzgerald Gymnasium at 5 p.m.
