Box Score FLUSHING, N.Y. – The Queens College women's basketball team used a powerful surge in the third quarter to run out to a 72-49 home victory over Roberts Wesleyan Friday evening.
Making the Knights' win even more impressive was that it allowed them to move into a three-way tie for second in the East Coast Conference with Roberts Wesleyan, who entered Friday's game a game ahead of Queens, and District of Columbia. All three teams now sport identical 14-5 records.
Madison Rowland was remarkable for the Knights, pouring in 29 points on 67 percent shooting and hauling 13 rebounds. With this latest performance, the junior wing is a prime candidate to claim her third-straight ECC Player of the Week honor. MacKenzie Rowland, meanwhile, had her hand in everything. The senior post nearly recorded a triple-doule with 13 points, 15 rebounds and eight assists, adding in four steals for good measure.
Leading by seven at half, the Knights methodically built what ended up becoming an insurmountable lead, holding the Redhawks to six points on a paltry 2-for-13 shooting clip. An extended 14-2 scoring run that spanned the final 3:55 of the period ending with Kristen Korzevinski's last-second three gave Queens a 23-point lead. Freshman reserve Emer Moloney scored five of her nine points during the stretch in what may have been her best performance as a Knight.
Behind the strong play of Mad. Rowland, who scored 21 first half points against the Redhawks, and seniors Mack. Rowland and Korzevinski, Queens is gathering steam at the best possible time. More than the winning, it is the way the team is beating the opposition. The team forced Roberts Wesleyan into making 15 turnovers. seven in the tide changing third quarter, and out-rebounded them by a 54-36 margin.
The Knights now have one game left to go before the playoffs, Sunday's home contest against Daemen. The team will celebrate its Senior Day, and tip-off is scheduled for 1:30pm.
