WBB Snaps Skid With Win Over Molloy

Box Score

QUEENS, N.Y. – Led by the trio of MacKenzie Rowland, Melissa Fumano and Madison Rowland, the Queens College women's basketball team defeated Molloy College, 62-50, in Fitzgerald Gymnasium on Tuesday night. The win ended a five-game losing streak and moved the Knights back to .500 for the season.

Mac. Rowland finished the game with 18 points on 9-13 shooting from the field. She added 10 rebounds to record her fourth double-double of the season. Fumano scored 17 points and Mad. Rowland came close to notching a triple-double with 16 points, 16 rebounds and eight assists.

Fumano fueled the Knights early on. The sophomore forward from Syracuse, N.Y., scored the team's first five points off a layup inside and a three-pointer off a pitch out from Mac. Rowland. Queens College led 9-2 before the game was three minutes old and muffled scoring bursts from the Lions to extend the lead 20-10 after the end of one quarter.

The Knights suffered a cold streak that spanned the entire second quarter, allowing the Lions to slowly creep back into the game. The team shot 3-17 from the field and committed six turnovers en route to only scoring six points in the frame. Meanwhile, Molloy found crevices in Queens' defense to score at the basket and earn trips to the free throw line. Heading into intermission, the Knights still led, 26-23.

A back-and-forth affair ensued at the start of the second half. The two teams traded baskets until a personal 6-0 scoring run from Mack. Rowland had the Knights up 38-29. Fumano scored next on a layup and Queens had its largest lead of the game at 11 with just under four minutes to play in the frame. Steady defense for the rest of the quarter including a pair of steals and a blocked shot allowed Queens to maintain a nine-point lead, 44-35, after three quarters.

An 8-0 run by Queens to open the fourth gave the Knights a 52-35 lead, which turned out to be enough cushion to finish out the game. Queens ended up defeating the Lions, 62-50. With the Rowland sisters dominating the glass, the Knights outrebounded the Lions, 52-26. Toss in the team's 45.3 shooting percentage while they stifled the Lions to a meddling 28.6 percent allowed the Knights to secure the home victory. Junior guard Kimani Jackson led the visitors with 17 points.

Up next for Queens is a conference road game against Dowling on Thursday, Jan. 14. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
