Knights Reach 20-Win Plateau with 74-63 Triumph at Dowling

Oakdale, N.Y. - The Queens College women's basketball team reached the 20-win plateau for the second-straight season with a 74-63 victory over Dowling College in Oakdale, New York on Thursday.  QC had back-to-back 20-win seasons for the first time since the 1978-79 and 1979-80 seasons.  The win was the fourth straight for the Knights, who improved to 20-6 overall and 15-4 in the East Coast Conference.  The Golden Lions are 4-21.

 

Queens fell behind 7-0 in the first two minutes of play.  Kristen Korzevinski broke the drought with a jumper to make the score 7-2.  After a MacKenzie Rowland bucket made it 7-4, Dowling responded by pushing the advantage back to ten points, 16-6.  Dowling had another ten point lead at the 9:10 mark when QC finally turned up the pressure.

 

Joya McFarland made back-to-back layups to cut the gap to six points.  Dowling answered with three points to take a nine-point lead.  Amber Harrison made a three-pointer to get the deficit back to six.  McFarland made another basket at 4:05 and QC was within four, 27-23.  Dowling got the lead back up to ten, but led at the break, 37-30.

 

Queens opened the second half with a 10-2 run to take a one-point lead, 40-39.  MacKenzie Rowland scored  a basket and Madison Rowland scored the next eight points.  The Golden Lions made a hoop and regained the lead, 41-40.  Melissa Fumano made a basket in response and the Knights never trailed again.  Fumano made a jumper with 0:53 left to put the Knights up ten, 68-58.  Finally, Madison Rowland got a steal and made a layup at the end of the game to make the score 74-63.

 

Madison Rowland finished with 27 points, six steals and four assists.  She posted a 2:1, assist to turnover ratio and shot 13-22 (59%).  MacKenzie Rowland posted a double-double with 10 points and ten boards.  Fumano came off the bench to score eight points.


The Queens College women's basketball team returns to action on Saturday, February 28, when they host Bridgeport in the season finale.  The opening tip is scheduled for 3:30 PM.
