Old Westbury, N.Y. - There is an old Chinese paradox that asks the question, "What happens when an unstopable force meets an immovable object?" That question could have been applied to the women's basketball game between NYIT and Queens on Wednesday. In a battle between 5-0 teams for East Coast Conference supremacy, the Bears got the better of the Knights, 84-68, in a game played in Old Westbury. Madison Rowland led Queens with 23 points and a game-best 18 rebounds.
The first half showed just how even the teams are, as the score was knotted at 33-all at the end of 20 minutes. The game was back and forth early on as neither side could take control of the score. Eventually, NYIT led 12-7, with just under thirteen minutes remaining.
From there, the Knights used an 11-0 run to turn a five point deficit into a six point cushion. In that run, MacKenzie Rowland accounted for five points, Madison scored four and Kristen Korzevinski added a basket. Four minutes after that, Taylor Miller made the lead seven with a layup off a feed from Imani Davidson. NYIT fought back and tied the score at the break.
At the 17:28 mark of the second half, Madison Rowland buried a jumper that pulled QC within a point, at 40-39, NYIT. From there, the Bears got hot. They used a 15-2 run to put the game away. A Madison Rowland three-point-play at 9:52 pulled Queens within six, but they got no closer as the Bears won the game, 84-68.
With the loss, QC drops to 10-3 overall and 5-1 in the ECC. NYIT is 11-2 and 6-0. The Knights saw their seven game winning streak come to an end.
MacKenzie Rowland had a double-double with 13 points and ten rebounds. Melissa Fumano came off the bench to score ten points.
The Queens College women's basketball team returns to action on Saturday, January 17, when they host LIU Post. The tipoff is scheduled for 3:30 PM.
