Second Half Comeback Not Enough as Men's Soccer is Nipped by NYIT, 3-2

Box Score

Flushing, N.Y. - The Queens College men's soccer team fell behind early against NYIT on the soccer field in Flushing on Saturday.  They rallied to score twice in the second half, but came up just short, falling to the Bears 3-2, in an East Coast Conference match up.  The team is now 0-4 overall and 0-2 in the ECC.

The Knights pushed the action early on, controlling play in the midfield and dumping the ball into the NYIT zone.  However, momentum changed in the eighth minute when Ivn Rico had the ball at midfield, dumped it down towards the Queens' 18-yard box, and the ball take a high bounce over the outstretched arms of QC goalie, James Brostowski for the game's first goal.  Despite the unlucky score, Brostowski finished with five saves in the match.

The score remained at 1-0 for NYIT into halftime and seven minutes into the second half, the Bears doubled their lead as John Camponsechi and Alex Barbosa hooked up for another score.  The game got physical from there, as both sides were fighting for possession.  Queens really picked up their play when Gutavo Holtz and Lawrence Nikaj were subbed in early in the half.

Less than five minutes later, Queens got on the board when Michael Vaghetti blasted a shot that was parried by NYIT keeper, Jonathan Rico, but Glen Reid was there to clean up the mess and bury the ball in the back of the net.  It was Vaghetti's first point with the Knights and Reid's second marker of the season.

QC tied the score in the 62nd minute, when the two giants, Jorge Artavia and Pol Narbona, connected for a goal.  Artavia got control of the ball in the middle of the field outside of the 18 yard box.  He lobbed a through-ball into the box for Narbona, who calmly tied the score with his first goal of the season.  NYIT scored the game-winner in the 70th minute and held on for the 3-2 victory.

The Queens College men's soccer team returns to the pitch on Saturday, September 27, when they go on the road to face Molloy.  The kickoff with the Lions is slated for noon.
