Flushing, N.Y. - Last season, the Queens College women's tennis team and the UDC team finished neck-and-neck in the East Coast Conference standings, with the Knights placing second and the Firebirds in third. The QC women's tennis team continued its dominance on Saturday, with a convincing, 8-1 win, in a match played on the outdoor tennis courts on campus in Flushing, The team is now 4-0 on the season.
Last year, both UDC and Queens appeared in the NCAA Championship. The Firebirds were a seven seed and the Knights earned a third seed. They were just two of six eastern schools to appear in the championship. They dominated play in the East Coast Conference as well.
The Knights opened the match by winning all three doubles matches to take a 3-0 lead. Angelika Sobiecka and Cami Abdallah were victorious, 8-3, in the first flight. The second team of Andrea Samson and Yevgeniya (Jenna) Plevako came away with an 8-3 victory as well. Finally, the combination of Molly Fanelli and Sumeera Kamil won via default.
The Knights dominated singles play as well, taking five of the six matches. Plevako won at first singles, 6-2, 6-0. Kamil took the first set in her match, but lost the second set, 3-6 and fell in a tiebreaker, 8-10.
Sobiecki won at third position, 6-2 and 6-4. Samson dominated her match, winning love and love. The fifth match went to Abdallah, 6-0, 6-3. Finally, Sarah O'Leary picked up a victory via default in the final singles position.
The team is now on a respite from conference play and will participate in the three-day, ITA Tournament starting on Friday, September 26.
